Moyes All-Time XI

To be fair the original post complicates it slightly because the answer would be 'No' for Stones but he's in the team that Myers has picked!

As always with these things there's the question of whether you're picking the best players who ever played under him or the players who played best under him. If it's the former then Rooney is a given and pretty much the first name on the teamsheet, if it's the latter then he probably barely makes the bench.
Not sure about the latter. Rooney against Bolton for us was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. It could be argued he peaked at the Euros before he left.

Pickford
Coleman
Baines
Jags
Branthwaite
Ndiaye
Pienaar
Fellaini
Arteta
Rooney
Yak

I can’t think of many strikers we’ve had under Moyes that have been better than 17 year old Rooney. Yakubu in his prime season 07/08, outside of that I’m really really struggling. Definitely not Saha or Johnson.

Gibson?
My goodness.
He was very good for a spell. He could thread a pass through the eye of a needle. Obviously it didn’t end well for him due to his boozing and injures, but he had all the ingredients of a top deep-sitting playmaker.

I tried to pick an eleven which, at peak, would be very dangerous. Not just shoehorning in the best players. That said, Garner and Carsley in that respect would also be a great partnership as Jimmy had that eye for a pass as well.

Please take Gibson out and replace him with Cahill and then swap him and Fellaini around.
I prefer Fellaini causing chaos in the box. I like a passer next to a defensive midfielder, so Garner Carsley would do well.

But I do think at his best that Gibson was fantastic for us.

Cahill was magic, but technically he wasn’t as sound. Fellaini brings his threat with a bit more allround ability.

I agree, obviously great players don’t just become great out of nowhere so clearly he was capable of very good performances when playing for us but in terms of his overall performance levels under Moyes they were nothing like what he did in his overall career (understandably of course, because he was 16/17).

None of them have been better in terms of talent obviously, that was kind of what I meant, but he was miles behind yakubu in terms of what he actually produced, bent had more of an impact on an individual season, probably Ferguson did too, without checking I would guess the likes of Saha, beckford, even Beto had better scoring rates etc. Obviously as footballers none of them come close to Rooney but I’m terms of what they did at Everton it’s a bit more nuanced. Struggling to make the bench is probably over the top but the general point stands, there’s a difference between the players who had the best careers and the players who performed the best for Everton.

I watched Rooney every week during those seasons and he was absolutely head and shoulders our best player in the 03/04 season, upstaging senior players and dragging us through games. Opposition were terrified of him, they used to double and triple up to try and stop him, there’s absolutely no way you can say Marcus Bent performed better as an Everton striker I’m sorry. Most of those players did play in better Everton teams but I don’t think that’s what we’re talking about either.

Fair enough, I was just trying to make the general point that it’s always difficult with these things to separate the actual best players and those who do best for Everton. If you don’t think that applies to Rooney it’s no big deal but as I said, there’s general point stands.
