Mourinho approach

Was reading an article the other day about Mourinho. It was going over how Chelsea have had a consistent spine with Cech/Terry/Lampard/Drogba for years and he build the rest of the team to fit in with them.

We look like having Stones/McCarthy/Barkley and would need to add a keeper and a forward to have the long term spine. Lukaku would of course cover the striker position leaving us just needing a top class solid keeper to fit the Mourinho mould.

I would go along with this whole heartedly (and have alluded to this frequently in the past) and am wondering if Roberto is of the same mindset. If so this could be what he's been 'keeping his powder dry' for.

The talk of adding Rodwell to Gibson in the centre to add to Alcaraz wipes out 3 positions with injury hit players. Looking at Pienaar and Osman and Barry if he signs thats 3 more midfielders who are not getting any younger either--6 in a squad which needs bodies and youth.

I definitely hope we can get the solid spine sorted but other than lukaku I cant think of any decent forwards hes ever bought nor keepers?

I mention the injury prone and ageing players simply because the spone must be reliable + young.

Chelsea had the financial might to keep that spine intact. If Everton had Terry, Lampard, Drogba and Cech as a spine in the early part of the millenium, then how long do you think we would have kept them?

It was our weakness under Moyes: A financially mighty Everton would probably still have Rooney, Lescott and Arteta as part of our spine. I don't think much has changed in that regard for our new manager.

As mentioned very easy to have a spine when you've got masses of money to keep them and add other world class players around them.

Moyes spine could well of been..
Howard Jags Leacott Arteta Rooney.

3 of them he couldn't keep hold of and around them could never afford quality in numbers.

We are now in a much stronger posistion than when moyes started but it will still be terribly hard.

I dont think its really a topic whether Moyes could have kept X or Y or Z....the fact is that for various reasons he didnt and spunked alot of cash when we had the chance to re-invest properly.

2 key positions for Martinez to fill....really wonder if thats what he will do + with who?
