I've been in the minority for a while now trying to defend Schneiderlin by advocating that he's been expected to play a role that he can't fulfil.

However, after his utterly shambolic and gutless performance yesterday, he deserves much of the criticism he has received. Totally inept.

Pulling out of tackles, easily caught in possession, truly awful passes (inc. some awful Hollywood balls) and so negative in both tempo and play.

He shouldn't be in the starting XI next week or anywhere near it to be fair, although with McCarthy now out I expect he'll get another opportunity.

Just maybe we’ll play with one holding player Gana than 2. Let’s face it we shouldn’t be playing two holding midfielders at home against a relegation threatened club anyway.

Gutless coward who's a division above where he should be, he got lucky after a good season in a settled Southampton team, he got his dream move to Utd, we all wondered why he couldn't get in Utds side, i think now we can all see why. When the chips are down, we can't rely on players like this lad.

He obviously has ability but is not consistent and certainly doesn't have the heart for battle.

When Sam came we had a midfield 3 of Gueye, Rooney and Davies. And we actually looked like a football team.

Get those 3 back into midfield, Walcott, Lookman and Tosun as the front 3.

Ideally we shouldn't need to and they certainly offer little or no attacking output, however once again our midfield was repeatedly overrun.

Lamentably, until we acquire someone who can actually strengthen our midfield and offer a presence then we're dammed if we do and if we don't.

Agreed. We have three fit senior specialist centre midfielders - Schneiderlin, Gana, Besic.

I can only guess Besic must have turned into Claus Thomsen to not get game time.

Banigime, Davies and Connor Grant are prospects who should be being nursed through.

Ideally we'd be letting Basic and Schneiderlin go and getting in quality to replace them.
