Further to my point @Lanolin - it's all about a partnership, as it is with any other area of the pitch.

Last season, people will point out that the Gueye and MS partnership that is so poor atm, actually worked well.

To an extent that is true, but I actually think there's a lot more to it.

During our good run last season, we either played a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 in the main.

In each system, Gana and Schneiderlin and 'one other' would form the midfield off the ball.

In the 4-3-3, it'd be Davies, with Ross as the right-forward in the front three.

In the 3-4-3, Ross would often drop deep to pick up the ball, making it almost a 3-5-2.

My point is that I think the partnership wasn't actually Gana and MS, but Barkley and MS.

Gana would be the sweeper, winning the ball back and bustling about. Schneiderlin would be the passer, with (in a 4-3-3 example) Davies the third-man runner.

That opened up space, with Ross then the person Schneiderlin would most often pick out.

In short, MS could dictate the play by being able to pick out his partner - Barkley - who'd then do the work up top.

Yeah you're spot on. This is why I can't get my head round people not appreciating Barkley - his ability to link midfield with attack was hugely underrated by some, and we're now seeing

I'd like to see Schneiderlin taking a bit more responsibility now that we don't have the same options around him. It's not his natural game but as a senior player I think he needs to be more willing to carry the ball, look for through balls, and shoot than he has previously. Hopefully we'll get the balance back and he can revert to his normal role but at the moment he's not doing anywhere enough for me.

It's a tough one really: when he's on form he's amazing for us but you can only know if someone is back on form if they play. So in reality he has to start doesn't he for us to find out?

That's a really good point actually.
I think the partnerships are sometimes obvious - like Pienaar - Baines, Stevens, Steven of days gone by, but now it should be things like:

Gylfi + A runner
Rooney + Barkley (should have been)
Davies and DCL
Kenny _ Vlasic
Baines - Lookman
Holgate and Davies
Bolasie + Rooney

What was he doing for the goal? Another pathetic performance. Did he suffer any long term injuries at United because he looks absolutely shot to bits out there. Constantly turning backwards because he hasn't got the legs to do anything else.
