Anyway, this is no big deal really, most of the country can't even pronounce his name.

Thing is, his name isn't really being written, a collection of abstract letters are being pasted together in a specific order. Sounds like nit-picking, but it uses a different part of the brain. Its how you end up with classic signs like:

I remember with some fondness Man Utd getting Anderson's name wrong on his shirt 1st game of the season.

Besides this is on purpose, keep Gerard firmly on the ground, yeah he gets the no 10 shirt, but he's got to prove himself for the club shop to even bother double checking his last name. Part of Martinez's masterplan.
