Thats one of my gripes with moyes, similar to walter smith, he can leave it to late with his subs.

I would considier rotating the team to suit the opposition.

Villa will be playing on the counter attack with pace, we will need to sit deeper than usual and not press up the pitch so much.
That means having Neville and Gibson in midfield would be a bad idea as they will have lots more of the pitch to cover, plus 2 holding midfileders wont be required.
I would drop Neville and play naismith behind Jelavic.

When they where forced to bring the game to the away team, they generally played down the flanks putting balls in and around the 6 yard area.

Villa aren't a counter attacking side these days. They play possession/continental football. They had 66% v West Ham last weekend but the majority of it was on their half way line.

Every player has quiet games.
Last match ossie was excellent and playing out of position.
Very underated player.

Bainesontoast is correct when he points out that Ossie has been played out of position so many times. I agree that this cant help but that doesnt get away from the fact that when he is on the wings he is lost, weak in possesion and mostly a spare part. Unfortunately for him there are far better options for his preferred role at the club.
i think if you were honest with yourself you would admit that Ossie has had far more inept performances than effective ones down the years. You cant call his performance against Utd excellent, he had an adequate game and got into some good shooting positions but, at the same time, he missed those chances. I dont dislike Ossie as he tries as hard as he can. Unfortunatley for him if we want to move forward we have to not play players of his calibre.

There's some strange posts in this thread.

Neville will not be getting dropped, he's been playing there a lot recently, that's not going to change.

There is no way Fellaini will be getting moved from this attacking midfield position he has been playing so well in and why should he. Osman has never influenced a game like Fellaini does from that position and he never will.

Injuries permitting, it will be same again as long as Distin is fit, if he isn't Jonny will be in.

Excellent post. If it ain't broke then don't fix it.

And that set up is far from being 'broke', it's the most effective system I have seen in years.

yep i get that but i really can't see villa first home game of the season sitting back and playing on the break.
It takes time to change a system it's not overnight.
Think they will take the game to us and we will eventually wrest it away from them because we are a better team.
I hope anyway.
Time will tell

Theres a difference between being a maverick and being wreckless with your career. Gravesen was a maverick but was always on time to training etc and worked hard. Mirallas by all accounts is a decent lad who works hard but has a bit of flair.

Thats fine by me.
