Thats one of the problems with social media; it's given some horrible people a platform to air their views and people regularly cross the line.

not to worry mam we'll get our best cyber cops on it

then a montage of people being dragged out of their houses in dawn raids and tweets being read out in court by a horrified judge

Fair point. What I was trying to say is that it's always been like that. We just notice it more with social media.

Nope, that was a watershed. Britain didn't 'do' public grieving before Diana. Fast forward a decade or so, and everyone was the same over Jade Goody. With the very greatest of respect, that was a disproportionate response.

Could be argued that churchills funeral was the same. Other than 1940-41 churchills political career was one fcuk-up to the next and he made a lot.of enemies on the way. Watch a clip on YouTube of.london dockworkers being forced in to lowering the cranes as his coffin went past on the river; to say they weren't happy is an understatement.
The Victorians weren't as stiff upper lipped as we are led to believe either

The unsavoury aspect to that is that a significant number of people hijack the event, trying to make it personal to them, trying to validate themselves in some way.

I work in a university and every year I get one year older and every year I get to deal with a new set of 18 year olds. Every year they get worse. Next year their dates of birth will all read ??/??/2000. I was trying to cope with the fireworks during an acid trip by the Thames NYE 1999. For that reason we will never get along.
