Did he keep his Helmet?
did you keep your helme.webp

...I like the generic; 'who were the most talented/best players at EFC during your time and what is your opinion of the manager/coaches you played for'.

Newell was a useful cricketer, I think he might have played in the Liverpool Competition, was he ever faced with a career choice of football or cricket?
I played with him at Sefton. He was a very good fast bowler. I took a slip catch off his bowling once, although I'm not sure what I was doing in the same team as him. The family lived near us and his brother went to my school. One day, while I was waiting for the 81, Mike Newell came up to me and asked me to take his brother's lunch in for him, because he'd forgotten it. He probably won't remember that.

....I think a few of the Quarry Bank footballers played for Sefton, good standard of cricket.

After starting off so well (think it was about 6 goals in his first 10 games or so), I remember he got into the England 'B' side and was a bit of a fan favourite. But then things kind of fell away and he never regained those heights. What happened? Or was it just one of those things?

Plus, does he still hold the same views about the game that he expressed as manager of Luton?

Played with both the brothers at Liverpool and Mike was an excellent cricketer, he was a great opening batsman and even better keeper standing up for the quick bowlers and taking stumpings.

I really did think he would go on and be a real regular scorer for us but I remember like you said his goals just dried up.

I remember a live game many years ago when top league football was still live on ITV, we played villa when David platt was excellent and we lost 6-2 but I remember Newell hit a cracking shot it hit a villa defender called Chris Price in the head and I'm sure it knocked him out. Anyone else remember this? for some reason don't ask me why but I think it still have the whole match on VHS somewhere, I taped all the everton live matches in them days.

Back in the days when I was a nurse, (before 'Everton in the community') we had a patient, an avid Evertonian, who was really, really ill.
I got in touch with the club and Mike responded. He came out to visit the lad and spent a couple of hours by his bedside. He was brilliant and showed a genuine concern.
It was so much more than just a player being sent out by the club as a PR stunt.
He displayed a genuine interest and compassion.
Mike Newell would probably not make it into my 100 favorite Everton players, but I can't speak highly enough of him as a man.
A true gent.
