2024/25 Michael Keane

Michael Keane is a bit of a conundrum for me, normally I would wish players who leave Everton all the best provided they don’t come back to hurt us in the future. If they are not Everton players then my interest wanes, again unless they are going to do us a bad turn. Keane is different, he has been such a drain on the club that I struggle to see him playing in another Premier League club but then given his skill set I doubt he will attract the attention of another Premier League club.
I'm not so sure,in a team playing four at the back with a decent midfield enforcer who'd stop attackers running at him he could do a job. Against all expectations he had a decent game at Fulham.

I think what you are saying is that if a team was good enough to make up for his short comings he would be alright. I think the days when a team could afford to carry a player have all but gone, the tactics are now at a point where weaknesses are exposed. I am not saying he isn’t capable of playing professional football but I am saying he isn’t good enough to play for a team in the Premier League who are looking to improve.

Can’t believe it’s probably controversial to say but for all his faults, he’s definitely a PL standard player.

If he is happy to stay as backup then it makes sense to offer him a new contract.

We're going to have to spend a minimum of 10m to replace him even as a 3rd / 4th choice. That money can be better spent elsehwere.

From a business perspective it makes complete sense to sign him back up, albeit it on reduced wages.

In other words, if we played players to cover how bad he is at his job he could do a job

NO, No and No!

This means you're reliant on not picking up injuries which we do constantly.

He's not competent enough to play at the top level, and if he had to play an extended run of games you'd soon why having him as backup was a terrible decision.

I'd rather spend 10mil or bring in a loan in to replace him.

There is absolutely nothing positive about keeping him.

I would say no, he has been instrumental in our relegation fights year on year
That is true of every player we have been with the club in recent seasons. Keane has probably played less than many but you single him out for blame.
Sounds unfair to me.
I think he will leave, I hope he does.
He will always be a scapegoat for some, even when not even playing.
No wonder he lacks confidence when he plays.

I was thinking more of a team looking to stay in the Prem. He's always looked more effective when we play away and defended deeper. Watching him at Goodison is an entirely different experience. I read some of the Fulham social media sites after the game and they all seemed impressed and to be fair to him he played well. Bring a Claret and Blue home?

I agree with all the points you've made.

I'm just looking at it from a business side and not a football side. I'm not advocating for him to get a new deal, but he will still need to be replaced.

I'm not convinced there will be anything better available in the market for little expenditure that is a substantial upgrade on him. Even from the loan market, your looking for a club to loan out a defender who isn't necessarily going to be a starter every week. If there was a club who was going to do so, I can't imagine there are many players who fit in that bracket, who again aren't going to command a sizable loan fee.

Four players have gone already, that's four we need to replace. We can't afford to lose many more, so we're at a point for me of what is going to cost the least to replace.
