2024/25 Michael Keane

I don't mind it not being cheaper if it's a more reliable player. Asi regularly tell my wife "you don't have to buy it just because it's cheap".
Yeah I agree, I just mean in terms of people saying ‘we can’t afford to keep him’, you can’t really say that without factoring in that keeping him is actually likely to be the cheapest option.

As I say, I’d be very happy to punt him but I’m also conscious that we might not have the budget to get anyone actually good in as a replacement, and that if we don’t just signing somebody like him who costs us more money probably isn’t actually a great idea. It all depends on how much money and ambition we have basically.

We're definitely going to have to be more frugal than some imagine but, for me, any deal at all for Michael Keane would be a false economy. He's lost us so many points over the years that I can't believe he offers good value from either a sporting or a fiscal perspective. Those points we lost add up and equate to league positions which, in turn, results in lost prize money.

Michael Keane is a bit of a conundrum for me, normally I would wish players who leave Everton all the best provided they don’t come back to hurt us in the future. If they are not Everton players then my interest wanes, again unless they are going to do us a bad turn. Keane is different, he has been such a drain on the club that I struggle to see him playing in another Premier League club but then given his skill set I doubt he will attract the attention of another Premier League club.

yes but if we sign say a 22 year old promising youngster at 4th choice, they’ll cost a small fee but wages will be a lot lower, and they will likely be sold for a higher price or become a key member of the side, a la Stones and Branthwaite
I don't disagree with you, but a 22 year old promising centre back will likely cost quite a significant fee, and demand pretty regular first team football. That was pretty much the O'Brien deal last summer.

Another like Branthwaite or Stones would be good, but they were signed as teenagers and took 2-3 years to develop into key players. And for every Branthwaite and Stones, there's a Holgate or Galloway.

As much as I don't think he should stay, I can see the logic to keeping Keane on a much reduced wage for 1-2 seasons, just as a squad filler as much as anything.

If it's a 4th choice CB, taking a risk on a Branthwaite/Stones type lower league punt seems reasonable to me. Depends on who we bring in at fullback, I've always thought that more defensive minded fullbacks could act as an emergency CB in a pinch.

It's going to be a very interesting summer (hopefully in a good way, but that remains to be seen).

ye i mean signing someone like them

stones had his best season for us in his first year galloway and holgate were sound to begin with, they didnt look out of place as teenagers. was only as they got older they dropped off

even branthwaite had a few cameos in his first season
