Broken windows theory...

Be tough on all minor crime and offences, and deter minor criminals from turning into serious criminals.
jay walking (alleged), littering (alleged), stop and searches (not even handed are they), toking the wrong* vape, accused of jumping the bus even though you've a ticket, shot in the head for pointing an invisible gun. The idea that more heavy handed treatment for ever decreasing levels of petty crime sounds somewhat dystopian...

No. Just no. That's not what I was suggesting at all!

There is a 'natural progression' for most serious criminals. It's logical that a minor, habitual shoplifter, left unpunished, may eventually evolve into an armed robber. It's logical that a minor drug-pusher may eventually become a major drug-dealer. These are the type of offences that should be dealt with early on, and with zero-tolerance.

It's not logical that a jay-walking, littering, ticket dodger will become a dangerous criminal that risks public safety. Common sence.

difficult drawing the line isn't it...
I wonder if you remember....

Or, you educate them, you help them out of whatever hole they were in to shoplift in the first place, you make them a better human. Hitting them hard, making them resent the state at an often early age is a recipe for backlash. Yes, there's some men (and women) you just can't reach, but that's a very small minority, let's deal with the reason a petty crime occurs in the first place before escalating them.

Its an incredibly stupid theory he's put forward, prevent career criminals by punishing petite crimes and essentially ensuring their only option in life is to become a career criminal. Especially as it will only be the financially vulnerable who are punished as that is what our court system is set up to do.

If you want to prevent crime long term you have to go way further back than the initial offence and invest in an inclusive society, but that doesn't make for boomer vote winning headlines in mail.

First and foremost, that should be the parents job, and not the states responsibility. More often than not, children are a reflection of their parents... Not always, but it's common... Discipline begins at home. Better to educate the parents of their responsibilities rather than trying to educate their children.

Why do you make it the law to wear a seatbelt? Or a crash helmet or a motorbike? Some people are idiots who probably shouldn't be allowed to breed, but they do, and they need help and guidance, and the children deserve as much support as possible as they are innocent in all of it. Absolutely 100% disagree with your view, but I do understand that thought process, it's just wrong to me these days.

I'm just troubled by the modern definition of 'shoplifting'. To me, slipping some food or drink into your bag out of hunger or desperation is understandable.

It's now, sadly, common to see mass public disorder and looting out of greed and lack of discipline, not desperation...

Is it though? That just seems anecdotal. And if true, wouldn't it be better to try and educate and create better human beings rather than creating more rift? It's the harder option, but the more rewarding.
