Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Hola messketeers - hope you are all well.

I know we normally keep the footy/everton related stuff out if here, but I just wanted to tell you I've changed my profile pic in honour of the steller appointment Everton have made to the board of directors.

Take it easy folks.
You should have sent that to Everton ,we need someone with a bit of bite and he doesn't look the man to me .

I absolutely loved the guy as a player Nath and the fact that he's stayed around the club and made the area his home. But apart from a p;laying career that ended about 25 years ago, what qualifications does he have for such a role?. For me it's another old boy appointment, the like of which has rarely proved fruitful for us in the past (Howard and Joe being the obvious exceptions). I think it's just a way of the board appeasing the fans because they know he's popular.

Also I think it's fine to talk football in here mate. You can do so knowing you can have an adult conversation and will not receive any abuse if you happen to disagree. Also you can stray off topic without fear of getting banned. lol

Sharpie is a great appointment . Had the pleasure of playing a round of golf with him once many years ago and we both got very drunk that evening. Top guy. Loves Everton as much as us.

Totally agree with you Fred - nothing against sharpy as a fella or a bluenose, he was one of my idols as a kid, and if he was given the role of striker coach I wouldnt bat an eyelid.

I just don't think being a great blue should be the only qualification for a directorship, it's another job for the old boys. We need proper professional businessmen and women steering the ship and challenging Moshiri and blue bill where needed - I'm not sure sharpy will do that. Hope I'm wrong.

In one respect you are right Fred he won't have any power or influence.

What qualifications do most ex players have when it comes to football admin - be it Van Der Saar at Ajax as CEO or Brands as Director of Football ?

It's probably a bit of a sop / fob off for the fans . I suspect it would be akin to have a fan on the board.

Really hope you're right mate.

Like I said to Fred, I love sharpy as a player and bluenose, and I've nothing at all against him as a evertonian, but I don't know if he's what we need on the board.

Time will tell.

Sounds like you had a great round and an even better 19th hole with him mate - bet he had some brilliant stories.

So do I Jazz, but I'd be as useful as a wet fart to the board in sorting this club out. ;)

I do love the guy as I said, but I also think he's a bit of a yes man. Maybe what we need on the board is somebody completely unconnected to the club who can come in with no preconceived views and give it a thorough cleansing. I thought Brand was that man, and maybe he was. I don't believe Moshiri gave him a free hand to do the job properly.

Hope I'm wrong like.

Probably one of the best days of my life mate , couldn't believe my luck to be paired in a 4 ball with him. I played ok . He hit the ball a mile but couldn't putt but some stories. And in the evening once we'd had a few ...... well let's just say that he has the same view of Kopites as us.

A lovely adjunct to that story is that the week later Everton were playing Sheffield Wednesday away and as I had loads of clients that were Wednesday fans I took a hospitality table at the ground.

After lunch and a couple of sherberts you make your way to your seats in the grandstand. However unlike the 100 club at Goodison where you literally walk 20 yards to your seat at Wednesday you have to walk past the press box to get to your spec.

Chance would have it Sharpy was doing co commentary and as we walked passed( I hadn't noticed him ) he shouted me over and we shook hands and had a laugh ( a couple of weeks later I'm sure he would have forgotten me ) . Suffice to say the punters were well impressed.

No , you're probably right Fred I'm just made up for him.

Actually you are right the time for sentimentality at Goodison should have been over years ago.

BTW I bet you're wrong about the first part of your post . I always thought that I was better qualified and would have done a far better job than Elstone. I'm sure the same applies to you.

Don't get me started on Denise

When they retire from football absolutely none Jazz. But most will go into coaching or management before they head upstairs, and ususally at smaller clubs before they move onto one of the 20 biggest clubs in the world. Sharpies spent the last 25 years entertaining fans on match day, commentating on youth team matches and representing the club at Charity Golf events. Hardly classical schooling for a place on the board. lol

As I say, I hope he proves me wrong. He's a great guy and an even better Evertonian.

If it's meant to be like having a fan on the board then I wouldn't be against that because I do think the board and the fans have become distanced in recent years. But then he truly must represent the fans and the only way he can do that is by engaging with them and listening to what they have to say, and then feeding that back to the board. He would need to openly engage with forums like this one and the same with twitter and facebook groups. He must hold regular meetings in open forum with fans and, most importantly, he must then give feedback to all the groups he's conversed with. Sharpie would be an ideal candidate for such a role, but in reality this is just paying lip service to the fans.

I saw that he is to be a non executive director. I'm still not entirely sure what their function is. Always seem a bit like ornaments. Nice to have but useless. Anyway I'm hoping he'll use his role to act as a critical friend to the board. Man of the people type of thing ( just for you Jazzy, Lord Denning's, if I remember rightly, man on the Clapham Omnibus.) Say it how it is. Great player. Don't really think he got the credit he deserved outside Goodison. Lead the line brilliantly.

That's brilliant mate. Are you allowed to say which firm you worked for.?

Hola Mascoteers it’s all pretty good here in Spain now the freezing fog !!! Yes feeezing … has buggered off to Malaga and left j my e back in the sunshine . I’ve been a bit under the weather for a week but the sun seems to have lifted things so I’ve been guitar building today … working in a commission guitar which is exciting … so I’m spending the next couple of days baking little bees for my signature rosette
Jazzy nate you’re a star … you know why
Oh and I’ve been in the studio at 5 am the last couple of mornings … I gave a sequence of paintings going on but in between them thus traditional view of spring popped out of my head
I’ll put it in the village gallery it may even sell
That's really nice. Have you heard of an Italian painter called Bruno Tonuci ? Quite reminiscent of his work .

If it's not too rude / impolite - how much would you be selling something like that painting for ?
