Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Yeah there is an element of catching up to do. However it also takes me ages to get from lying down to sitting then sitting to standing. I just need to learn that it's a new me. I've always been 100 mph and now I have to think about everything and at 40 years old change takes some getting used to. In fact I've always hated change.

England is painful enough either last gasp defeats or be mocked for over expectations.
Just give yourself time mate and you will adapt and maybe even surprise yourself.

Do you not follow the Workington rugby league team at all ?

I always find it strange, that the West of Cumbria is rugby league land, yet further down, the likes of the Westmorland and area is rugby union.

I watched it a bit I the 90s but a bit like the football team they were treat as lepers as travelling was so far from the Lancashire/Yorkshire hub that was the Super League. The other outliers were London but that was encouraged as it was the capital city. Ultimately West Cumbria is working class like Lancashire hence League whereas Westmorland is more middle class so they are Union. Its sad things are like that but it always will I suppose.

I like Cricket and F1 that are seen as middle class sports to a degree and love football. I just enjoy the sports that stimulate me and capture my interest. I actually like both League and Union about the same. I can watch them but don't really get gripped unless it's England/GB about to win something. I did however like the Wigan team of the 90s Offiah et al.

Isn't it funny how many people found there love for football because of that WC in 1990.

My first World Cup was the 1970 one with Pele and that brilliant Brazil team, but I was only 8, so I wasn't really old enough to appreciate it.

The first one I watched properly was 1974 with Johan Cruyff and the "total football" Dutch team. What a player Cruyff was, and that team was arguably the best to not win a World Cup.

Still remember Berti Vogts kicking Cruyff all over the pitch in the final, the dirty get. Would have been sent off these days.

I've seen clips of that Dutch team and they were class. I turned 9 during the 1990 tournament but it took until about January 91 to get obsession levels. I collected pro set cards and learned who players were. There was a time I liked Oasis the band as much as Everton but pretty much they have been my one constant thing in 30 plus years.

It's a shame Cruyff got kicked all over and I'm glad there is more protection for players as some of the tackles in them days were borderline assault. However it can't go any further now as I wouldn't enjoy watching football with no tackles.

I used to collect those cards, too. I had one for the 70 and 74 World Cups.

I can't remember exactly when I first started watching Everton matches. Probably qround 1970. I've got a vague memory my Evertonian mum watching the 68 cup final, but I wasn't really paying attention. I was only 6.

At school, from a young age, you were either blue or red, even before you had any real interest in footy.

I can remember a few matches from our title winning 69/70 season, particularly winning at Anfield to practically clinch the title. I had no idea about all that at the time, but I still remember how chuffed my mum was. I'm smiling as I type this, remembering how happy she was.

Funny how some things just stick in your head, but you can't remember things that happened yesterday.

Enjoy!!!! Warning…. Do not try to watch the Anfield derby the next season!!!!
For you too @messymascot

Sorry I didn't reply to your messages sometimes I read them and forget to reply (I'll blame the meds). Basically the same answer as I gave above.

How's things your end?
All good here, been to visit my friend, she’s widowed and doesn’t get out too much. We go back a long way, were at school together and used to go to Posh games together in the distant past. Hope you have a good night?

Hey Messy, i see above you said you dont really like International qualifiers etc, well there is some real football on tomorrow night (Friday) here in Ireland. I will be at a game so wont be using my subscription to LOITV streaming service which is the official streaming service for the League Of Ireland (LOI). So if you would like to watch a "real game" even if it will be of lower quality then you are used to watching in the PL, let me know and i will share my log in details with you.

I had another day of sleep yesterday. Hopefully I've now caught it up and can start having some awake time. The pain is under control which is good but it now appears I have very little strength anywhere in my body. My arms and legs are very thin and there appears to be a lot of muscle wastage. However I'm still here fighting and as long as I can look after myself, hold a coherent conversation and I'm not in excruciating pain I will keep the good fight going. Its always nice to read people asking after me. Hope you all have a lovely day whatever you might be doing. I'll be mainly watching F1 practice.
