Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Well that’s 3 days of so called care support. Christmas Eve a young woman arrived with paperwork, the carers that were supposed to arrive didn’t turn up, she made excuses for them, traffic etc. Christmas Day I got a phone call saying the carer was at the front door but no one was in, I just happened to be standing right outside of the front door !. Another phone call describing the house and the name of the road immediately suggested they’d gone to the wrong village, they eventually turned up but by now I’d already seen to my wife, but I said at least you now know where we live. Today, they should have been here by 1.15 at the latest, no sign of them so I changed, washed and dressed my wife again and gave her something to eat. The carer turned up an hour later but there was now nothing for her to do. This home care is draining me of energy. An inauspicious start to say the least….
Stick with it Pete, it’s not easy getting used to a new Carer regime. There are downsides , they can be unpredictable in their timing if they have other clients to see before Kay, some will be better than others and some will appear almost uncaring at times. Initially they will have a lot to learn from you about the best way to look after Kay as she’ll be an unknown patient. The upsides are potentially there though, some carers are excellent , will treat Kay with respect and build up a relationship with her and provide you with a degree of comfort that she is receiving additional help to all the work that you do and will continue to do for her. Best wishes.

On the face of it that's not good Pete. But if you're going to use carers you need to cut them some slack mate, There will always be teething problems with these things and it's also happening at the worst possible time of the year for arranging cover for staff absence etc. Also, You never know what problems the carers need to deal with on earlier appointments and these guys already work to a tight schedule. And if they turned up an hour late and you already had Kay washed, dressed and fed, I'm guessing that you hadn't given them much leeway before taking over yourself.

In my experience carers have been incredibly dedicated and hardworking people, not to mention grossly underpaid and undervalued for what they do. They also tend to have a wealth of experience in dealing with people suffering with dementia. I think most on here have been urging you to give it a go Pete, mainly out of concern for your own well being as much as anything. At the end of the day it may not work for you and that's absolutely OK. But I would urge you to at least give it some time mate, and try and resist the temptation to do things yourself if they're running a bit late. I hope things work out for you.

I understand that, and the carers themselves seem lovely people. But it’s not like a carer turning up at whatever time when it’s not time imperative, it’s supposed to be about getting my wife up and changed at a specific time otherwise we have a wet bed and an over wet wife. Timing is everything and I’m getting fed up explaining this. Im spending more time worrying about them turning up than I should be. As the person on the spot I’ve even tried to elongate the timing between changes of pants but that has just resulted in wet nighties and bed, which creates even more work. Prior to her hospital episode, our timing was perfect, my wife was dry, the bed was dry, her nighty was dry. Now to accommodate the carers it’s shot and I can’t live with this. The real assistance I needed was getting Kay into then out of the bath, but now I have an electric bath chair which is perfect. I’m sticking with the carers just to ensure we ‘are in the system, but tbh it’s adding no value….

Morning everyone.

Gym and no alcohol for the next 4 days thank you very much 😂 😂.

Super point for the mighty blues but we are still very close to the relegation zone so really need to win a few games soon .

Off to the Southport record fair today to see if I can find the holy Grail of a pristine original copy of Aja.

Have a lovely day everyone.

This might be of no help at all, but I would guess that 9 times out of 10 they will be running late. Would it be worth changing the time to half an hour or an hour earlier to compensate? It absolutely has to work for you and your routine, otherwise it’s of no benefit.

Morning all, bit miserable and foggy here. We’re off to Lytham for a walk along the front to blow some cobwebs away. Nothing too vigorous- my husband’s just got an appointment through with the orthopaedic dept in January - he desperately needs a new knee. It’s so frustrating when your mobility is so limited. Once we’ve had that, I can plan our island hop taking into consideration hills and proximity to things.
Have a lovely day whatever you’re up to 💙

Good afternoon all. We're still on leftovers. Today's l7nch was turkey , ham, salad ( we need some greenery!) and , my fave, piccalilli.
I'm about to have a drink now.
I've also booked flights and ferries for a bit of Greek Island hopping next Sept/October.
As for the match....so far so good.
My sister got me some piccalilli from Harrods ! Have to say it's top notch ; a good job really because it's 3 quid for a small jar.

That’s what I’ve asked them to do thanks Val, but I think there are competing demands on their time….

Wonderful, carer late again, but I have received an incredibly detailed financial assessment form to fill in, which will take an age to pull all the info together and will then obviously decide that I need to pay for everything which I told them I would do anyway. I’m going to cancel all this nonsense today……
I am with you Pete ,it is nothing to do with anything other than you and Kay .The last thing you want is more stress ,one thing though is try to leave the door open in order to get help in the future if needed .Stay strong that man
