My Dad, a fireman on the railway would, when setting the fire, “bank” up the coals as he did at work. Although we had a lovely blaze going in the hearth there was a risk of the chimney catching fire, so sometimes we had to find wet rags to damp the fire down filling the room with steam and smoke. Dad was undeterred, didn’t put him off and he continued even after we, on one occasion, had to have the fire brigade. Mum put a stop to it eventually- she bought a gas fire. lol

Did you use to have a back boiler too H?. Whenever it started rumbling it was always my job to go out into the kitchen and run the hot water. Being the youngest it was also my job to go out into the back to get more coal. Slave labour. lol

Afternoon all. Been full of cold for the last few days so feeling a bit sorry for myself. Not too sorry that I'll miss out on G&T Friday though so I'll catch up with you all later.

Had a nice day so far. Went with Mrs bl to see “ One Life” in the cinema, starring Anthony Hopkins/ Helena Bobham-Carter and based on the true story of Sir Nicholas Winston’s prewar exploits to save Czechoslovakian children from the Nazis. Very moving and an excellent film. We followed up with a nice soup, bread, cake lunch

….i’ve just become a grandad for the 4th time. Our daughter gave birth to a little girl a few hours ago.

8 months work done and dusted today and I never have to think of it again. Nice lunch with happy people and home to light my aforementioned fire and find a movie.

Absolute bliss.
