I’m sure in three decades when some new footballing god comes along you’ll have people from our generation saying that Messi and Ronaldo took a bunch of bums to multiple titles and European cups.

How is The Diego singlehandedly driving Napoli to two serie A wins and a UEFA cup re-writing history? I mean that is exactly what he did - they'd not won a bean before he showed up, and they've not won a bean since he left. No one can question his epic performance here, which was achieved I might add with cocaine consumption that would wreck an elephant, and Italian defenders trying to volley him up in the air week in week out.

It's just a different world of performance and innovation. Other players can follow along later and win more stuff, or score more goals, but that's just like some modern rock band selling more records than Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The Diego layed down the blueprint for greatness in the modern game, so will always stand on the top step in the pantheon.

Napoli weren't exactly no hopers though. In the seasons prior to Diego joining, they finished 6th, 10th, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 12th, and then after he joined they were 8th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 1st and 8th. That first championship they won despite only winning 15 of 30 games.

The 89/90 season was arguably better, but they also had the likes of Ciro Ferrara, Alemao, Fernado de Napoli, Careca and Carnevale in their squad. Giovanni Francini, Luca Fisi and Massimo Crippa were also Italian internationals. So 9 of their first XI were internationals.

Why did those quality players want to come and stay at Napoli do you think? Because of Maradonna - he built that team, forged it into win. Without him players don't come, or they leave, or don't play as well. The sine qua non of a great player - they make other players better. Your good players are now exceptional, and your ordinary players are now good, thanks to the incredible sphere of influence of the Great Diego.

I'm not saying he wasn't great or that he wasn't probably the best player in the world at the time, but to suggest Napoli were a one man team is as daft as saying Matthaus was a one man team for Germany or Platini for France. It's an argument made out of ignorance in my opinion, like suggesting the great Steaua side was purely Hagi and discounting what was a strong group at the time headed by an undoubtedly world class player.

As I said previously, the bulk of the Argentine side was made up of players from clubs who were winning the Libertadores and World Club Championships, yet you listen to some and they were pub players dragged along by Diego. Just because YOU don't know who they are, doesn't make them rubbish.

I also have to question how good he was as a leader given the drug addled way he approached coaching, you wouldn't say leadership was a strong suit.
 

If you took 80s peak Maradona and peak Messi and put them in a modern day match it would be an easy choice as to who is better.... just the physical conditioning alone of modern day players would put Messi ahead of him.

Sure you can argue over natural talent but the fact is Messi would outperform Diego or any player from the 80s or before. He has the same talent level as the greatest players ever and he’s in a period of time where football players are simply just better because of the improvements in sports science etc.
 

Its messi and not even close really.

If messi is base 100 then nearest would be Maradona on about 86.
Proper Ronaldo would be closer but for his injuries.

I think the point of that was he doesn’t have the same level of quality to face week in week out prior to facing the top 6 English sides? At least that’s what it sounds like. Not that I agree. He’s the best there’s ever been (apart from Cadamarteri).
 
Bumped into my (none match going) RS neighbour today. (Strangely have not seen him since last week).

I cruelly lauded Lionel, and he responded by saying that Salah was the better player.
