Messi "best player of all time"

He's scored over 40 goals a season every year for the last decade, with over 50 goals in half of those years. It's insane.

I always go back to something I said to my girlfriend and now wife when I first saw Leo make a couple of senior appearances, even ahead of Ronaldinho's Ballon D'Or - he already looked better than Ronnie. It's hard to grasp how good he is at this sport, he really does sit at a table all by himself

I attended last night's match because I expected Messi magic, irrespective of the result - he delivered and that's my goal until he retires, see him as much as I can live

I still remember one of his earliest CL games against Chelsea and he gave Asier del Horo the complete run around, ultimately resulting in him lunging in and getting sent off. At that early age you could tell he'd be something special, but what marks him out for greatness is the way he's continued to improve. His dribbling is still incredible, but his passing has come on leaps and bounds, his set pieces are now arguably the best in the world, his finishing has obviously improved.

It's that continuous improvement that stands him out from the likes of Rooney and Neymar, both of whom were prococious at a young age but largely stayed at that level rather than getting better. Cristiano Ronaldo is another who has improved as he's matured, although even he has reached a point where he's regressed to 'simply' scoring goals, whereas Messi continues to add more and more strings to his bow.

Definitely. Del Horno was lucky not to be sent off sooner in that match too since he really stamped him badly on the knee, never even got a yellow - maybe ref giving a make up call eventually. My word that pitch, I'll never forget those potato patch tactics from Mourinho

His improvement and maturation as one skill set starts to fade (top end speed simply isn't there any longer) is what you'd hope from every professional athlete. I don't really comprehend his continued level, biggest risk for most of the great athletes/teams in history is complacency yet this never happens with him. He has a singular sort of desire to be a protagonist irrespective of opponent or occasion.

I do miss that rabid pitbull/Doberman approach he had early in his career that was interrupted often with injuries - he was so relentless, just went after defenders over & over again. I can't recall anyone being that aggressive much less successful in attack - I really cherish those memories, a gift. And as I say, he is really pure joy

He's amazing, one of the best ever

He's not THE best however

That title belongs to the bloke below

Defo not Pele, for one thing his goal record is very dubious to say the least, also most Brazilian people will tell you that Garrincha was a better player than Pele.

People always mention the "dubious" scoring record as a way to knock Pele

Even if he didn't score as many goals as people think, he still scored A LOT of goals and was amazing in the 58 and 70 World Cups, along with being a really skillful player and the most famous player of all time

He's the best. That doesn't mean Messi isn't an all timer, because he is. Pele is just better IMO

People always knock Messi’s inability to turn up as an international player but why does no one ever knock Pele’s sub-par performance against the Nazi’s?

He could have dragged that side to a win and given freedom to his men. Instead, he was an absolute show pony.

You know it was his 600th goal, right? So there's about 599 other reasons why he's fricking awesome. By contrast Maradona got 150 goals in Europe.

Is it best player or best goalscorer? Maradona will never be beat in my view as best player. Messi is brilliant but he's played his entire career at a club surrounded by top players with pitches like carpets. Maradona played in an era without that and in a time defenders come through the back of you and hardly a foul ever given. went to napoli and won them the league. Thats sort of like messi going to stoke city now and winning them the title. Also won a world cup virtualy on his own. Messi has done very little on the international stage.
Maradona was a freak with the ball. True one off.
