The region I'm from is famous in Germany for its open and jovial people (which doesn't necessarily mean much coming from other regions where people usually have a huge log up their backsides). Maybe just a case of a blind hen finding a grain of corn

Hmmmm, I'm trying to make an educated guess. Once spent a week near the Mosel and found most people there surprisingly friendly. Similar in Köln. We are visiting Hamburg in a couple of weeks because my wife's German family (who live in Hesse) have often told us that it's also another friendly area. I'd go with one of those?

For balance, I've got an ANCIENT pair of samba's I still use for kick arounds on our estates all weather/ tarmac courts. And they're ideal for that.

Very good guess, close to Köln/Bonn as well as Koblenz where Rhine and Mosel meet!
