How the hell was this planet discovered?

It has been suggested that the planet may have been observed as long ago as the 1st Century BC.

But this woman on the BBC site just now said in a clip that even the Hubble Telescope can't look at it cos of the sun's rays, and what they would do to the equipment.

I just don't understand how someone so far away without the aid of any kind of equipment can say that's a planet, and that's called Mercury.

Baffles me.

It can be looked at and seen at certain times of the day but i think Hubble is too powerful but it can be viewed with other telescopes.

When it was first discovered they didnt actually know it was a planet the same way as we do now but it is pretty crazy to think of them coming up with this stuff 1000's of years ago.

Further reading shows it was called Apollo in the sunset and something else at sunrise. Crazy romans.

The 'tasche never really did it for me , tbh .
Nor that , " Aaay - Ohh " , thing at Live Aid , neither .
Night at the Opera was good though , back in the day .

It was discovered 14th centrury BC, its easier to see in the southern hemisphere

and can be spotted 2/3 times brighter than Sirius during a total eclipse.

Astrophysicist Bradley Schaefer claims that the observations reported in these tablets were made in the region of Assur at around the year 1370 BC

You've been to Chichen Itza haven't you? Then you'll know a little about how beards ago they knew this [Poor language removed].

yeah but how? How did they know that what they saw in the sky was a planet and not a moon or another star from another galaxy? I'm hooked, i'm going to get a loft conversion and star gaze.

I don't know, belief system. I'm reading a really good book at the moment which documents the worship of the sun (not on Merseyside) throughout the ancient cultures, it's amazing.

Anyway, that didn't help clearly but just wanted to share.

The ancient cats were massively developed in some things that we couldn't comprehend.

Yeah they had [Poor language removed] going on didn't they? That's one of the reasons I don't believe in all this one god [Poor language removed] - but lets not go there just yet.

Your choice mate and fair enough. All my mates are massive atheists, our arguments/rips are superb when I'm back.

This book also tried to tackle the big bang, which I liked how it did it.

Well mate I read loads of fiction by authors trying to disprove religious beliefs, like what happens if they find the body of christ and take his DNA and then clone the fella. What if he can't perform miracles.

But I'm interested in the history from the biblical times, but I know of history that goes well before this time, and we have Roman, Greek and Egyptian gods, there is the Japanese and Chinese emperors, the Pre-Colombia people from South America, Babylon, and so on and so on.

There's more to discover than the bible and people singing in a church and scaremongering isn't for me. I'd rather watch a documentary on the discover of a tomb that may have belonged to Jesus and his family.

Definitely. You choose your own path and beliefs.

Some of the ancient lids, like listed there, had some ingenius ideas and practices.

Anyone been to Cairo? Wow. Giza plateau is superb but the Cairo Museum is one of the most amazing places on the planet.
