Kharkiv away is a good shout. Fiorentina at home could count as well, as they certainly performed and sort of got a result.

Manchester United at home in 2005 is the best example for me. That was the one that sealed fourth.

It's not a fact of we don't turn up in big games, it's just big games where we're favourites or when it really really matters.

I mean, we provide some great performances like fiorentina when a lot thought we were already out of it due to the first leg, because we were massive underdogs. But when we had pressure on us e.g. taking a 2-1 lead to lisbon, we very rarely turn up.

The United and Liverpool semi's we had the better team on paper and played well for about 20/200 odd minutes when the pressure was really on and didn't turn up the final in a bit different circumstances, but ultimately the same.

sorry, misread the title, thought it was on about performances not wins, scrap what i said.

Semi Final vs Man Utd
1st leg vs lisbon
Carsley derby
Firorentina
sunderland away

I'm not an especially pessimistic blue but Kharkiv away's the only one, really. Newcastle to seal 4th in 04/05 gets an honorable mention I suppose.

They were very, very close against Fiorentina and Villarreal but close isn't enough. The United semi's a strange one. The fans could be extremely proud of themselves but Moyes and the players were fortunate to progress after failing to best one of the weakest elevens United had put out in about two decades.

Its much easier to name games where Moyes and the players **** the bed.

Thing is though, how big is the list of games that 'mattered' which we lost ? Not as big as some make out, would be my guess.

The problem is everyone will say the quarter final vs wigan and the round of 16s vs reading and fiorentina, but they won't count the quarters vs west ham, boro and sunderland or the round of 16s vs villa ect.

If you count the game vs liverpool at anfields where we threw away 4th in 2008, you also have to count the game vs man u where we cemented it in 2005.

That's the problem we've got here.

The truth is we've played four actually big games since 1995, which is coventry at home, the semi vs liverpool, the final vs chelsea and the play off vs villarreal. Everything else wasn't a big game.

It's one of those crushing Evertonian moments isn't it, like when you go through the squad and realise that we only have one or two good players.

Depends what you rate as good too though mate.

I mean players in League 2 are good, when compared to say, me.

But Everton players compared to the rest of the Premier League? Overall about 7th best. 6th at a push.

Good enough to be in the best team and win things. Doing things of significance as a player.
