McCarthy-- Keane/Vieira

Roy Keane was a brainless thug McCarthy is nothing like him he's a cultured midfielder and a top grafter. I would say arteta is a better comparison.

Arteta?? ...surely you're not being serious.

And speaking of...WHERE'S THE ARTETA MONEY BILL?!

What? Do you guys not rate Arteta?

Personally I see a lot of similarities. Both have good passing, positioning, awareness, mobility, intelligence, and ability to dictate the game.

IMO Mcarthy offers very little going forward (which keane did) which is a bit of a problem when paired with someone like Barry. It stops him being classed as a top top player IMO.

Not managed to work out his role yet under bobby. We play with 2 deeper CM yes? Are they both supposed to sit deep (1 right 1 Left) or is Barry supposed to be deeper and McCarthy slightly advanced and more attacking?

I remember Ross moving into mccarthy's posistion against that lot and really going forward from that posistion, yet McCarthy doesn't do that.

I'd be interested to see a Barkley/McCarthy partnership develop at some point. I don't think Ross will be a No.10 all his career.

We should be fine with two sitters so long as the three in front of them are freed of defensive responsibilities and pitch in with a decent number of goals (which players like Barkley, Mirallas, Pienaar and Osman do not).

That's why it isn't really working (the system), imo.

Keane hints at this himself in fairness, if he's not going to be the holding player we do need to see a bit more from him going forward, I really think he has it in him though

I think the best comparison for McCarthy right now is Scotty Parker. He is still missing the attacking game to be compared with a PL great like Keane.

Ye agree with you there he does remind me of parker aswell. I also think he is not going to develope an attacking side to his game, which is'nt a bad thing cos all teams need a grafter in there side. The way Martinez has him playing at the moment is a box to box midfielder, with barry as the holding mid, I think in time he will do barry's job and barkley will be the box to box man but they need a bit of time to learn which McCarthy can learn of barry just don't know who in our side Barkley can learn the box to box of unless we get that type of player in. Might be chatting shiote but thats my opinion

A fair few people on this forum are comparing McCarthy to Roy Keane. I was just wondering where the comparisons came from other than them both being Irish ?

Also, for a central midfield partner would it work to have a Vieira type alongside him? These types certainly seem to take the league by storm (even though they were already
At least not yet.

Very, very few players could have done what Keane did against Juve in the CL Semi when they went on to win it.

Awful person, apparently, but a god of a player.
Only heard good things about keane was the same off field as he was on it

Don't think anyone really knew who viera was before he went to the arse, but what a player he was, imagine him an Keane in the same side, NOW THAT IS A CENTRE MID replying on me phone keeps fckng up soz all

Lukaku Tadic

I'd like that to be our realistic team for next season. Lukaku is going to be tricky to get hold of for another season but it isn't impossible, and funds could be used to get both him and Tadic I reckon.

Oviedo wouldn't be a permanent solution but I think he would be more than capable to do a suitable job for our targets next season. Funds couldn't possibly allow us to strengthen two strikers and a new left mid, so that could be realistic I think
Don't think Jose will loan Lukaku to us again cos he knows wit roberto in charge we will be up there next year

Looking at city, they have Fernandinho and Toure in the centre -- I was just thinking if we had a Vieira type alongside McCarthy we'd tick all the boxes of a quality central midfield.

Not saying these players are ten a penny but shouldnt be impossible to find for the right price.

I still think with 2 sitters you need creativity and goals from at least one of them. Chelsea, city etc are getting goals and assists from those posistions on the pitch.

Arteta is far far better looking than Roy Keane.
