Player Valuation: £100m
A fair few people on this forum are comparing McCarthy to Roy Keane. I was just wondering where the comparisons came from other than them both being Irish ?

Also, for a central midfield partner would it work to have a Vieira type alongside him? These types certainly seem to take the league by storm (even though they were already top players).

Roy Keane was a man without peers, when you consider the finest midfielders of the premiership era its hard to look past Keane, Viera and Gerrard.

McCarthy doesnt need a midfield partner, ideally we should be playing with 1 holding midfielder.

4-1-3-2 its the future, embrace it.

He is good. But no Roy keane. At least not yet.

Very, very few players could have done what Keane did against Juve in the CL Semi when they went on to win it.

Awful person, apparently, but a god of a player.

Keane not comparing James to himself.

“From what I have seen this morning that is probably a good point. He probably plays a little like me. Maybe not as aggressive and possibly looking to mature in terms of his personality on the team over the next few years but that will all come. That comes with maturity and when you get games under your belt.

“But from the way he trained today and the game we had, he was getting in very good attacking positions and making very good forward runs – which I think is always something I did when I was a young player, particularly at Forest. But I don’t want that to be twisted round that I am comparing him to me, far from it.”

coleman jags distin baines
------mccarthy
mirallas-- new player--new player
--------lukaku--new player

@MoutsGoat ?

Howard
Coleman Stones Jagielka Baines
McCarthy
Mirallas Barkley Oviedo
Lukaku Tadic

I'd like that to be our realistic team for next season. Lukaku is going to be tricky to get hold of for another season but it isn't impossible, and funds could be used to get both him and Tadic I reckon.

Oviedo wouldn't be a permanent solution but I think he would be more than capable to do a suitable job for our targets next season. Funds couldn't possibly allow us to strengthen two strikers and a new left mid, so that could be realistic I think

Ah! Forgot Keane was involved in the Irish team.

McCarthy has the potential at 23 to develop in the next couple of years into a better player than Keane imo. The boy is a big presence already and playing alongside the master Gareth Barry will help him improve further.

I think I said it in the thread before we signed him that the one part of his game he has very much in common is the timing and reading of the game to be in the right place and right time defensively. He will be the man getting into the box at just the right moment to cut out an attack/block a shot or cover the line, just as he was against Serbia although he slipped as he was stopping the shot and unfortunately it went in. This was one of Keanes greatest assets IMO. He also has a bit of an attitude to him, he will fight for the team.

Keane talking about maturity is a huge thing, as I can see him being much more like Keane if he really believes in himself. I think he is the best player we have had since Keane potentially and thats huge praise as Keane is one of the best players I have seen in my almost 30 years of watching this little sport we all love.

As for a partner, I don't know, I kind of hope McCarthy will be as dominant as Keane was because it could also allow us to have a Scholes type who can create without ever worrying about whats behind him because he knows its being covered. Keane made Scholes the player he was in some ways for me.

Roy Keane was running the Ireland midfield at the 94 World Cup against Italy, last night McCarthy was getting overrun by Serbia and after 20 something odd games without contributing one iota he is minus 1 in goals.

Whoever asked Keano the question needs locking up. No doubt if Robbie was assistant he'd get questions on Shane Long. Lazy journalism.

Roy Keane was a brainless thug McCarthy is nothing like him he's a cultured midfielder and a top grafter. I would say arteta is a better comparison.
