It was just a joke mate. Jeez.

Ahhhhhhh, no way, soz man. I forgot I wasn't supposed to make jokes too.

God, I do this all the time... I see people makeingjokes, and I try and join in and make more jokes, when I know I shouldn't be making jokes because I'm not 1 of the popular joke telling one's... I just forget sometimes.

Apologies man. Forgive me? Virtual handshake?

Can't believe I upset Sylvester Stallone.

Gutted.

Bedtime Kev.

You and @ijjysmith have made me belly laugh there so at least I'm happy.

Anyway, Pennington, doesn't look like a professional athlete does he? More like a school prefect. I think he is going to ace.

Yeah, it's funny that, footballers do tend to have a certain look... with a few exceptions... and you're right, Pennington doesn't fit the usual mold.

That said, i was playing 5aside a while ago and one of the lads got his mate to come and play because we were short. He turned up and me and my mate both thought he was gonna be a proper ringer just based on the way he looked... Moody, tanned, had his hair just so, socks round his ankles, illumonous yellow boots, all the gear.

Anyway, he was awful... control was atrocious, couldn't shoot to save his life, could barely run.

So there's hope for Pennington yet.

Seriously though, I do think he's got something about him. Seems like a natural leader too.

Most overly-physical defenders hit a wall in their late teens/early 20s because in youth football they're bigger and faster than their peers so don't need to develop the fundamental positional and reading elements of a great defender's game. But when they get into men's football they're either coming up against fellow beasts who match or eclipse their physicality, or experienced minds who can exploit their positional deficiencies with clever movement.

Pennington has clearly been physically average all of his life so has therefore developed that tactical intelligence to compensate; that will take him further and over a more sustained period than his more athletically spectacular rivals.

I rate him highly as a player and see him as an old-school Terry/Carragher type defender, the kind of whom England are currently lacking. I genuinely think he will emerge within the next 18 months as one of the very best in the league.

Where is he? I want to see him in the first 11 so Mori can sit on the bench and at the very least watch how to pass a ball.

Matt has to be better.

he's sitting next to me mate.

only kidding, he's currently playing for the u23's as things stand. I'd be surprised if he's given a chance right now as Jags is usually on the bench so I should imagine he's next in line to be picked if one of them are dropped. Hopefully though he makes a few squads and is given a chance at the end of the season.

Hmmm.

Hopefully with the (lack) of options we have and with such experienced players in our defence, he gets integrated into the first team soon. I like him.

I know I sound repetitive, but what exactly has holgate done wrong? Our three at the back covered the defiencies of Mori and Williams and give us width by allowing Baines and Coleman to push on. It gave us the natural width, that was so lacking in our play yesterday.

I would like to see Pennington tried as the middle in a 3. It's a role that takes a bit more intelligence than being RCB or LCB. I think we have plenty of players comfortable in them positions but only really Williams as middle man.
