Ah, that's right. That was a wild WC

We remember it fondly because we beat Mexico in the Round of 16 and only lost to Germany through cheating in the QF. But if Portugal hadn't lost to South Korea, we wouldn't have made it out of the group.

If the same thing were to happen this summer, Germany would have to lose to us and Ghana.

Snopes says that's not true.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum concurs, a 1999 article noting that:
[O]thers have asked that question of the staff at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. in recent weeks. "There's no evidence suggesting it was ever sponsored by the New York World newspaper," said Hall of Fame researcher Eric Enders. When the World Series between the National and American leagues began in 1903, the owners borrowed the name from the world championship series held in the 1880s between the National League and the American Association. Enders concludes the name didn't originate from the name of the long-defunct newspaper. It sounds like an urban myth

I demand @johnnydawg68 apologises to us all for lying about this, tbh.

First he made me bet all my savings on altidore getting the pl golden boot for 2013-14 and now this.

Let's be honest though. That's like saying we shouldn't call Real Madrid the best team in the world because they only won the Champions League and haven't won that jarg world tournament FIFA puts on. No club team anywhere in the world is going to beat the best team in MLB. They might not beat ANY MLB team in a 7 games series.

I'd say there'd be a few Nipponese teams that could do one over on the Astros. :P

No just looked it up. Costa Rica made it in 1990 and then usa and mexico in 94. Not at the same time.

Would be huge if it could happen.

Doubt it mind, I think you'd be fortunate to get 1 of the three through. Tough groups.

That FiveThirtyEight interactive calculator has Costa Rica's chances of reaching the knockout up to 72%. Mexico's are at 59%. Ours, 34%, but if we can get the win tonight I'm sure that would improve significantly.

(Oh, and Honduras have like a 9% chance. You could argue that they'll have a better shot at the Swiss or Ecuador, but they're still not that great of a team.)

My Polish relatives (by marriage) never tire of reminding me how that last group game went.

No, it's like saying we shouldn't call RM the world champions, theres a difference.

This is America. We make the cheeseburgers, therefore, we make the rules.

Ah, but other countries DO play basketball, hockey, and baseball.

Just because Europe (read: the UK), doesn't doesn't mean other countries don't.

Asian and Latin American nations are baseball mad (and generally better than us). Basketball, whilst we do reign supreme, has very fine teams from Eastern Europe, Spain, and South America. And Hockey, of course, is generally best played by Canadians, Russians, and other cold places.

I'll grant that the 'World Series' is a stupid name. And 'gridiron' shouldn't ever in any way use the word 'world' while being described. But basketball, hockey, and baseball are legitimately multinational sports.
Think I read that is was called the World Series because it was first sponsored by a newspaper called the Chicago World.
Note to self. Read all posts before making a t*t of myself.
