US and Mexico made it out in 2002. Forget who the third team was. Definitely wasn't Canada
I wouldn't say emotionally scarred, but perhaps emotionally scraped with mild irritation. If I could instagram my soul...

Obviously an unreserved apology goes out to anyone emotionally scarred by that.
Ah, that's right. That was a wild WCCosta Rica. Came in 3rd behind Brazil and Turkey on goal difference.
I've reported it.
Ah, that's right. That was a wild WC
Snopes says that's not true.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum concurs, a 1999 article noting that:
[O]thers have asked that question of the staff at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. in recent weeks. "There's no evidence suggesting it was ever sponsored by the New York World newspaper," said Hall of Fame researcher Eric Enders. When the World Series between the National and American leagues began in 1903, the owners borrowed the name from the world championship series held in the 1880s between the National League and the American Association. Enders concludes the name didn't originate from the name of the long-defunct newspaper. It sounds like an urban myth

Let's be honest though. That's like saying we shouldn't call Real Madrid the best team in the world because they only won the Champions League and haven't won that jarg world tournament FIFA puts on. No club team anywhere in the world is going to beat the best team in MLB. They might not beat ANY MLB team in a 7 games series.

No just looked it up. Costa Rica made it in 1990 and then usa and mexico in 94. Not at the same time.
Would be huge if it could happen.
Doubt it mind, I think you'd be fortunate to get 1 of the three through. Tough groups.
My Polish relatives (by marriage) never tire of reminding me how that last group game went.We remember it fondly because we beat Mexico in the Round of 16 and only lost to Germany through cheating in the QF. But if Portugal hadn't lost to South Korea, we wouldn't have made it out of the group.
If the same thing were to happen this summer, Germany would have to lose to us and Ghana.

That's probably fair. Now that there's a World Baseball Classic, the winner of that seems most deserving of the World Champion titleNo, it's like saying we shouldn't call RM the world champions, theres a difference.
Think I read that is was called the World Series because it was first sponsored by a newspaper called the Chicago World.Ah, but other countries DO play basketball, hockey, and baseball.
Just because Europe (read: the UK), doesn't doesn't mean other countries don't.
Asian and Latin American nations are baseball mad (and generally better than us). Basketball, whilst we do reign supreme, has very fine teams from Eastern Europe, Spain, and South America. And Hockey, of course, is generally best played by Canadians, Russians, and other cold places.
I'll grant that the 'World Series' is a stupid name. And 'gridiron' shouldn't ever in any way use the word 'world' while being described. But basketball, hockey, and baseball are legitimately multinational sports.
