Just because Europe (read: the UK), doesn't doesn't mean other countries don't.

Asian and Latin American nations are baseball mad (and generally better than us). Basketball, whilst we do reign supreme, has very fine teams from Eastern Europe, Spain, and South America. And Hockey, of course, is generally best played by Canadians, Russians, and other cold places.

I'll grant that the 'World Series' is a stupid name. And 'gridiron' shouldn't ever in any way use the word 'world' while being described. But basketball, hockey, and baseball are legitimately multinational sports.

Yeah, I do think the four big british sports of association football, cricket, rugby union and rugby league are bigger multinationally than the four big US sports of ice hockey, american football, baseball and basketball but brits do like exaggerate that difference to excuse how we're not the best in the world at any of them.

I think if we were to order team sports in terms of number countries where it has legitimately took off, Basketball would be second only to association football.

Association Football.
Basketball.
Rugby Union.
Ice Hockey.
Cricket.
Handball.
Volleyball.
Water Polo.
Baseball.
Rugby League.
Field Hockey.
Netball.
Lacrosse.
Bandy.
Polo.
Korfball.
And only then would you get onto the completely one country games like American/Australian/Canadian/Gaelic Football.
