Martinez talking about Everton history and Howard Kendall

Just read that then, he seems to be really proud that he is the manager of a historical giant. He is right, we do belong at the top of the table competing for titles.

“There is an understanding that, as it is, we are not in the financial top six,” he says. “Financially, those clubs work in a different place. But I think everyone at Everton knows we belong in that group. We belong there through history, what the football club means, through success in the 1980s and how Goodison Park has been an incredible landmark in British football.

“You can have a big blank cheque to get you into that level, or patient work. That patience has to be there. We know we have to have it. But my dream, the football dream, would be bridging that gap. In our DNA, Everton belongs as one of the top clubs that should be competing for titles.”

Not a single mention of knives or gunfights.

I like this fella already.

I love Roberto. I really really hope he does the business.

Every night in his first two weeks as manager, Martinez sat down to work through a three-disc DVD set of Everton’s history and it was footage from 1933, of Dixie Dean and Co being interviewed on the Goodison pitch about the FA Cup final in which they beat Manchester City, which struck him most. “When you see the team Dean was playing in doing that little recording on the pitch, that gives you a huge sense of it,” he says from the early-morning serenity of the Goodison canteen, not long before the calls start raining in at 9am. “You think, ‘That’s the same ground we play on’. It puts it into perspective – that it’s a place of such respect.”

top 6 ha, obviously sees a line in between everton and liverpool

Did our former manager ever say in any interviews that we 'should be competing for titles'? Because I don't remember him saying so. I know, I know, he's gone... let sleeping dogs lie. Still, I like the cut of young Roberto's jib and his positivity is contagious.

Yep, he's got spirit, and understands the issues, I hope he's got the minerals to sort it like :)

I know it's rather against the spirit of the article, but I really do think it's poor that the board haven't financially supported the manager they've appointed more solidly thus far, 6mil's peanuts in the PL.

Come on Bobby!! Let's smash the 6 fingered inbreds tomorrow and runaway with league.

EVERTON EVERTON EVERTON

He already gets the club more than his predecessor ever did or had a prayer of doing.

Obviously, it remains to be seen whether he has the ability to live up to his ambitions, but at least the attitude is correct - which is more than I can say for the bad melt we had in the managers role for the last decade.
