Martinez Interview

That interview frightens me.

It is like Hitler ranting on and on at his general as the Russians encircled Stalingrad by telling them to fight on to the last man no mater what because victory is just around the corner.

Martinez is insisting that his ways are right and that the players will "have to play his way....but be better about it".

And he won't "compromise" on his "philosophy".

*shakes head*

It is going to be a long hard winter, lids :(

Adolf Hitler : My part in his downfall by (insert least favourite player's name)

Just because you "heard/read somewhere" doesn't mean it's right, Jamie :p

And I am not trying to make any "argument".

I am just a very concerned Evertonian right now.....and for the life of me I don't see how any of us can be owt else.

These are scary times, my friend.

And that is why I made the Hitler analogy......Adolf is synonymous with a "bunker mentality" and if the rantings in that there "interview" ain't displaying a bunker mentality in which Bobby and Bobby alone knows what to do then I am a Dutchman :p

Happy New Year to you and yours, pal :)
Same to you mate.

I'm worried myself mate. I'm sure we all are to varying degrees. Obviously only time will tell but I do agree with Martinez that he has to stick to his guns on this one and hopefully the players will rediscover the swagger they had last season. Personally I'm convinced it's a question of confidence.

I will say this in criticism of, not so much our philosophy, but rather the way we're carrying it out at the moment.

I think Guardiola's Barcelona (especially the first 2 seasons) were the perfect encarnation of what possession football should be about.

1. When you've got the ball you try to keep it at all costs.
2. When you haven't got the ball, you get it back as quickly as possible.

On the first point, we're failing due to individual mistakes and/or lack of quality. Here is were I agree with Martinez's argument in the interview about being better at our jobs.

On the second point, we don't seem to be set up for that part of the job. The first line of defence has to be the attackers. We shouldn't be letting defenders play the ball out so easily.
A high percentage of Barcelona's goals came from them stealing the ball high up the pitch and catching the defence off guard. Even players of their calibre struggle when they have to always take the initiative with the ball. When they have a lot of injuries, lack of form of star players and are low on confidence they drop points to inferior teams

In our case, we obviously don't have that quality of player so the system has to be worked on till it's perfected. The whole idea has to be second nature to the players. Barcelona adopted the possession philosophy initially under Cruyff more than 20 years ago and adopted the pressing game of Sacchi's Milan with Guardiola about 6 years ago. We've been trying this for 18 months. There's work to be done both by players and management team..
Last year we may have set the bar really high but maybe we took teams by surprise because it was such a departure from Moyes's philosophy. Most teams definitely respect us more and set up to stifle us. Add to that what most agree was a disastrous preseason, some unfortunate injuries and loss of form of key players and it's hardly surprising that we're struggling. Worse than any of us expected? yes. However I really believe we need to be patient. I enjoyed watching Everton more last season than I have for more than 20 years and I believe Martinez can take to those hights again and possibly beyond.

It's still on.

A more apposite analogy would be WW1 :

Great enthusiasm and excitement at the beginning, giving way to disillusionment by Haig' s tactics of useless assaults, by walking slowly at the enemy.

After a good period of time, and after sustained criticism in some quarters, new and more mobile tactics evolved.Together with young fresh bodies victory was achieved.

To paraphrase : Tomorrow belongs to us.

Pretty much. However he needs the players he wants signed up.

Spend less time giving jarg interviews and more time focussing on fixing our situation nice one

Re the perception that we had a "disastrous pre-season" I hope Bill tells Bobby there will be no more swanning of to the Euros or the World Cup for a month, taking his eye off the ball during a critical period in the preparations for the following season.

I really dont get this...first tough period in Martinez era and some are seriously crying after moyes...and even worse...some seem to suggest that Martinez doesnt get everton.

*face palms with brick

We have been in this position under moyes at this time of the season, and i couldnt see us getting any better and was worried. We had no style except lump it up and hope for a piece of luck. Guess what, we did get better and things started to work for us. I am sure this will happen this season. Hopefully starting tomorrow.

Moyes only had us in a higher position at Christmas once in his last 5 years at the club.
