Re the perception that we had a "disastrous pre-season" I hope Bill tells Bobby there will be no more swanning of to the Euros or the World Cup for a month, taking his eye off the ball during a critical period in the preparations for the following season.

Methinks the problem with the pre-season was the lack of an agreed schedule of where to go and when, and how that would relate to all those Blues who were involved in the WC.

There were various tours available to Everton, but for some bizarre reason we ended up going to Thailand - home of Chang - but not at their request, as the bit part in a game arranged for Leicester City by their main sponsor and the biggest business rivals of Chang.
And throw in we played in black in that match, a colour deemed to bring bad luck in Thai society and that trip was negative from the outset. I'll wager Chang would have paid us NOT to have gone there rather than be a part of something for their opposition !!
We should be planning the coming summer and pre-season training and tours now, not waiting and hoping for something to come along.

How do they define an error that leads to a goal though I wonder? I'm certain many more of our conceded goals could have been avoided if not for a mistake of some kind.

I think it's defined as an unforced error, like in tennis if you watch that.

Everyone jumping on his every word and taking the piss is really uncalled for.

Yeah, we're not doing well, but some people are over-complicating and exaggerating what the problems are.

He is right - the main problem is the defence. If we had a better defence that didn't concede so many, we'd have the platform to play our normal game.

I like the fact he has optimism and talks us up. Rather he did that than years of that unambitious, self-preserving 'I promised them nothing so I won't disappoint them all' Moyes crap about reaching 40 points.

Part II of an excellent year in review of tactics in the Guardian talks about tiki-taka and evolution of counter-tactics. I guess those who are pro or anti can all take something to back their positions from it. For me, we appear to be attempting part of what the best teams do but not doing the pressing at all.

I think that goes back to such a poorly organised pre season, there's been a few players who've not looked upto there usual standard of fitness or sharpness since the start of this campaign. Martinez has a lot to learn from his summer of inactivity I just hope he's not to stubborn with that either.

It would be interesting if anyone knows how Wigans preseason went when he was there, they never seemed to start the season well and only really picked up after Christmas. His first pre season with us was all set in place when he arrived and maybe that aided his good first year more than was realised at the time?

I'd agree with that mate, we seemed to have lost that urgency when we don't have possesion.

So what do we do? Take the pre season planning out of Bobby's hands? I don't think that would go down well
