Delivered top 4 in a freak season whem 61 points got you 4th...then proceeded to make a tit of himself in the qualifier with his neanderthal tactics. Pity 72 points didn't get us CL under RM - he defo would have had the tactics over two legs to get past Villarreal.

Be fair, the quality gap between that Villarreal side and Everton was monstrous. They had half the Argentine national side lining up for them. Our best player in the first leg was Phil Neville....

Hang on, when we played in the Ukraine in the Europa League under Martinez. (I forget the name of the team, was it Dynamo Kiev?) We were leading the game going into that second leg. Martinez had it on a plate and only had to defend what we had. He played fluid attacking football and we got picked off at every opportunity. He didn't learn after they scored their first and still opted to attack. We had a great chance of winning the cup that year, we blew it in Kiev.
He didn't "have it on a plate". They were 2-1 down with that away goal. And the Kiev team were excellent.

You'll be telling me next Martinez never masterminded the downfall of the Samba Boys and it was all down to Henry....the feller who just lost his first game in management. Lol.

You saw in the second leg last 20 minutes how ropey they could be.

That was winnable....just not under Sgt Major Hoofball.

Thanks Connor. This is my thread after all. I can't be having it hijacked by people talking about my predecessors. Seems my plea has already fallen on deaf ears though...

Are you telling me if Martinez kept his job and was allowed the Moshiri money to build a team, he would have done it well and had us competing in the CL now?

Wait, did I read that someone stated that Bernard wasn't fast enough?

Second of all, Silva doesn't have to play "wingers". He's clearly intent on the OUTSIDE BACKS providing the width in our attack. The forwards aren't really playing as wingers, more like inside forwards, but regardless, how on earth isn't Bernard good enough to do so?

He had no problem lighting up Man City in the CL last year. To suggest, though, that the doesn't have the pace to play as a winger is nuts.

Yes, I understand that now. However, the major point stands. Yesterday underlines he's not what we want on the left. Richarlison was bought for the position and needs to get back there...as his no show yesterday also underlines.

Different games, different tactics.

Bernard and Digne linked up well against Leicester and they both had space down the flank. Likewise, Richarlison had space in behind because Leicester pushed forward.

So, and I said this a few weeks back, in away games i don't see anything wrong with the Bernard-Rich-Walcott-Gylfi attacking unit, or at home against teams we know are going to come out at us. We are suddenly a very dangerous counter-attacking side, and those four can be deadly.

Now, at home against teams who will come and sit back, soak it up, we probably need another solution. I'd say Tosun up front (or DCL) for now, until Jan when maybe we get another striker (unless Tosun's goals come and then maybe we can wait until the summer to see what's available rather than rushing in Jan).

Tosun, for example, is more adept at that front role but doesn't have to worry about using his (lack of) pace to get in behind. There's no space there anyway so he can concentrate on linking the play (which he is decent at, when it clicks) and creating space for others/getting on the end of things in the box, where he needs to be.

That means dropping one of the front three behind the striker, and we have four (five, if you include Lookman) first-team ready players to pick from.

It's a really nice problem to have, for once.

Sorry to be dim, but where does Bernard play in that scenario, exactly?
