He's not a CB. Never will be. He hasn't got the concentration levels that all top CBs have. They visualise danger before it happens and are always switched on.

Stones is a player who can link defence and midfield/attack up. He's a Carrick type of player. Been saying it for three years now.

I don't know if he's quite enough of an athlete to play that type of position. Being a good athlete and ball player as a CB is a bit different.

But yeah, he makes too many mistakes, too many lapses in concentration.

The evidence was clearer than ever in the Second half v United in the fa cup Semi, he started off every move from midfield. It’s a shame no one has tried it yet because he would be a top player there.

He has a lot of talent. There's no question about that. He's brave and he's competitive, he has a good range of passing and can carry the ball for distances if need be. He could even do a Pogba type role a little further up the pitch than I suggested.

IMO he undoubtedly is. He could eventually end up a box-to-box midfielder. I just wouldn't put him anywhere near a back four.

Possibly.

I think in terms of quality on the ball, yeah sure, Stones does have the ability to be a decent deep lying playmaker who could fit in with the style City play.

But i think it's pretty daft to say Stones isn't a defender cause he doesn't have the defensive nous yet champion him playing a defensive mid role when you probably need more of a defensive brain to play there than you do at cb.

On the ball fine, but off the ball you need to be fully 100% switched on, you need to be in the right position, know when to press and when to back off, know instinctively where the ball is going to be in that area, what runs to track and which to pass on, know where the opposition players are and where the space is, know which way to turn in tight situations, know where you team mates are and where your only available pass is.

So Stones might be able to play there but i'd be surprised, hence why he hasn't.

Having had a bit of time to think about yesterday's game, there is some to be positive about.

We look really good going forward, a refreshing change from last season. Valencia are a Champions League team thisbe season and are no pushovers. We will score more this season and create more than last for sure.

Richarlison looks a great signing and if he can keep up that intensity, him and Walcott will terrorise defences.

However, on the subject of defence... yeah it looked bad. The goals were down to stupid mistakes. Players? Or bad defensive system?
Probably somewhere in the middle I think.

But this is still very early days for Silva, and there is much still to fix.The early signs are, to me, that we have improved from last season.
The defensive issues do need sorting as a high priority, but I doubt they'll be anywhere near fixed come the end of this window.

I think we will see some big score lines and plenty of "Eff off Everton" for a while, but no where near the relegation doom some have been pedalling!

How does being linked to a CB undermine my argument that we could sell RFM without having to evaluate him?
You’ve argued that he hasn’t had enough time to assess the squad to identify what we required in defence. The fact that he’s been trying to sign Mina for several weeks implies that he’s already made an assessment of the centre back position.

Yeh the last few weeks? What's that got to do with what he might have done before he joined us?

You're getting lost in your own argument here buddy.

He is a professional, with pride and morals. He was employeed by PSV, he had jobs to do for them. As if he was prepping us while with them.

And to expect him to do that is also shocking, you would be the first to fume if he does that with us!!
Where have I said he should be doing that in his working hours for PSV? It’s almost like no one has ever done anything in their spare time to prepare for a new job!

Are you certain? He's pretty quick for a guy his size playing CB. Is he quick for a box to box midfielder? I sure don't think so. Good passing and foot skills for a CB, but for a central or defensive mid? Can't see it myself.

Even if you only take the time he’s looked at our squad as the start of his employment he’s had enough time to identify that we needed to sort out the defensive side and recruit accordingly. We identified Mina and Tierney weeks ago which shows that he’s already made that assessment. The fact that we are 6 days from start of season and have only secured one of the players required for those key positions is a concern and has affected preparation for new season.

Yeah I know that I was talking about what we needed to do overall on the defensive side. 1 out of 4 at this stage isn’t great.

Its frustrating, but no wonder when you think about it

a) New manager and DoF
b) World Cup-year
c) Bloated squad and excessive wages
d) The window is closing early.

Add to the fact that the standard of players we seem to be targeting is much higher, and we are not such an attractive proposition without european football, I'd say Brands ans Silva have been phenomenal ;)

(as long as we bring in at least 1/2 DC + DMC...)

As was I. Along with the subs bench as they're heavily used all three finals.
He signed 27 players 2013/14, 25 players 2014/15, 23 players 2015/16. 2015- 4 players from 2014 starting 11, 2016 - 4 players from 2015 starting 11. So my point about him practically signing a new team each season is valid and I’m really not sure why you are splitting hairs.

Let’s hope so mate. I’d certainly be relieved if we signed a couple of centre backs and a centre midfielder before the season starts.

I must say I do a lot of soul searching over Stones. I think he's one of the most over rated CBs I've ever seen; however, I can see he has a lot of ability to play out from deep or the middle of the park - so much all round ability that he could become a world class player at it. It's a shame his managers so far have all limited his development.

There's all the players used and the number of finals matchday squads they were in. So 11 players of 33 were in at least 2 finals and 4 were in all 3. As for you claim about the number of players signed you've juiced those numbers ridiculously with inconsequential youth players and B team players. In the summer before the first final they signed 8 players of consequence. Then the next summer they signed 4, and finally the summer before the '16 final they signed 5 players that got anywhere near their squad consistently.

I even gave you an out at the beginning saying I don't know what you mean semantically when you say "virtually new team". Maybe what I've just presented to you constitutes a new team to you but in my personal estimation it's not.
