Really, hes retired 5 years. Its hardly not a modern example or the game has evolved, if anything its regressed. Almost the same pool of managers were working at the same time.

I think a better question is does a DOF enable or disable a great manager, would Ferguson have been better with a DOF or not for example.
I think what a (good) DOF does is:

1) ensure continuity
and
2) widens the options when it comes to appointing a manager, as you're then looking for someone who is (first and foremost) an excellent coach - not having to worry about finding someone who is BOTH an excellent coach and a great judge/spotter/acquirer of playing talent

"With the central defender, from the beginning we had Mina on our list and Lenglet on our list but he went to Barcelona quite early in the market so it was quite simple for us: go for Mina," Brands told the ECHO.

“And, honestly, I was watching England v Colombia in the house of Farhad with the chairman and Marco and I said: “S**t, he's scored”.

“Because that makes it more difficult for us and especially as it came against England, so that was double s**t.

"You go through those kind of things in the market, it's like it is.”

Brands says the Blues could have secured his services earlier in the window if they had be willing to pay more but the Dutchman was unwilling to pay over the odds.

“I came in on June 1, you identify positions and you start working," he explained. "Then you have the World Cup and a smaller time in the window and you don't know what kind of consequences this will have for the countries around us.

“Do they wait? You saw in Barcelona, they were expecting bigger offers for Mina in the last days of the Premier League window, that is why they waited.

“Then it is a little bit of a gamble. I could maybe have had Mina earlier but then would have to pay £5m more and I didn't want to spend anymore money, so that is always a little bit of a gamble and that makes it a little bit tricky and a little bit difficult.”

You dont rush what wont be rushed.

I’m sure Marcel will rush some transfers after feeing the pressure from a few blokes on the internet.

The man has ice in his veins.

Let’s judge him when the window closes hey lads?

What he does need to do is get a wiggle on, we haven’t even stood still yet have we, Zouma I h would only bring us still and that’s 7th.

We need 4 more after him.
