Maradona

An extraordinary talent in his prime and electrifying to watch, a shame he descended into the drugs and hangers-on later. The more recent videos of him partying off his cake are very sad now, he was clearly mentally and physically ill.

He'll always be the benchmark of individual skill and football genius with a wild personality streak.

I always particularly liked how cheerful he seemed...most of the time.

The greatest.

Neither did Maradona.. but that takes away from the fable I suppose
Maradona for the most part was the stand out star for his country and also for Napoli - where he brought them success they have not seen since.

Argentina were abysmal in 1990 but Maradona almost won them a 2nd successive WC, a feat no player on the planet managed. He set up cannigia in the quarter final I think it was to KO Brazil in 1990. In the 80s and 90s tackle's were horrific also, I mean red car after red card stuff - even XXX rated, Maradona had no protection and was not feigning injury like Nemmar's of today

If anyone is in their 40s its easy to see the genius that he was, if you only watched bit parts of him in the 21st century you missed the GOAT

As well as the greatest player he also probably had the greatest fouls

Probably not. But he was 17 and scored 2 in the final.

I don't judge players on World cups to be fair. Maradona was fantastic and is one of the great but there is also a lot of fabled re writing of history with him. Like Argentina were crap or the napoli team was crap and he won everything on his own. He didnt

Napoli were no great side when Maradona arrived. They had some poor seasons after finishing 4th in 81. By the time maradona arrived in 84 they were mid table fodder.
I mean come on. They had never lifted a title in their entire history before he arrived.
They won the title because of him. Just plain stubborn to suggest otherwise.

thats like saying Leicester won it because of Jamie Vardy. It's stupid to suggest any one man won a league title for a team

Have you actually watched Argentina or Napoli in the 80s and 90s? I have. I guess you never actually watched him

Like I said Argeintina had a pretty poor team in 1986 and a terrible one in 1990 yet he was the star of the show. Napoli were useless until he arrived, once he got into the swing of things at Napoli they were untouchable and Italian football in the 80s and particularly the 90s was awash with real superstars you could roll off your tongue - much better players than the £30 million Nathan Ake junk we see today - Yet none could touch Napoli, Baresi of Milan had this to say and he too said Maradona was the best player he seen.

You must have had some titanic battles with Diego Maradona when he was in his pomp with Napoli; any particular memories stand out? Did he ever make you look stupid? What was your tactic with him - just kick him as early as possible?
Louis Harrison, New Orleans
Well, the odd knock might happen, from time to time! [Chuckles] He was dangerous, he used to score against us often. We had to be very well organised; put pressure on him, doubling up, tripling up even to limit his talents. Because if it was one-on-one, you'd lose.

finished 3rd the season before he joined. Hardly useless.

i'm not saying Maradona was crap am i?

Why? most Brazilians will tell you that Garrincha was their greatest ever player not Pele.
Most Brazilians never saw either of them.

Back in the day He was more popular amongst Brazilians as they loved the not even arsed style. From what I've seen, heard and read, Garrincha was a better dribbler but Pele was the superior all round player.

Garrincha made Maradona look like a boy scout off the field. Died at 50.
