I know, but putting a child on live TV who has just witnessed an explosion is just begging for speculation. I'd expect this kind of thing from Sky, but the BBC really should hold themselves up to higher standards than that.

I know mate, totally understand where you're coming from. However, I appreciate that they're trying to get to the bottom of it. One would hope that the young girls would have been in contact with family first.

They asked her if she thought it was terrorism. How is that a good question to ask a young girl who has just been involved in the situation?

Did they? I didn't hear that. Seems very un-BBC like to ask a question like this.

People saying it was a balloon that popped near a microphone and it caused a stampede.

So many different stories flying about, this is the problem with Twitter, etc, and everything getting sensationalised.

Can't believe people have gone to a concert and not came home, them poor families will be frantic right now.

It should really be banned.

I don't know if you have seen it, but a few years ago Charlie Brooker did a fantastic programme about 24 hour news where he basically proved all it comprised of was the media encouraging the viewer to just look at absolutely horrific things happening to other people, and then to continue looking in case something exciting happened.

The sad thing is, there's no stopping it now. TV has to compete with social media, which is the epitome of instant news.

Social media isn't much better, within minutes, you have someone saying it was "just a speaker exploding", then you have some cretins posting a picture of a training exercise, and then you have some two bob actress from Corrie chucking in her completely inaccurate information to her 100,000+ followers just to confuse everything that little bit more. Infuriating.

well a ballon will do well to make a flash of light, like the video in post 64

Just got home from the Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena. Don't know exactly what's happened but as we left the arena and were in the concourse of the building we heard a huge explosion. Honestly we thought it was maybe just a speaker falling over or a problem with the sound system kicking back because it echoed but people instantly started screaming and running. Didn't see any smoke or anything that would suggest it was a bomb but it was very very scary. Would imagine people are injured due to the stampede of panicked people running away from the arena. We are safely home and saw no casualties but I hope everyone is ok ❤️ police and ambulances flooded the area almost instantly and we were advised by stewards to head straight home as quickly and as safely as possible and avoid Manchester Victoria station. Hope everyone is ok ❤️

Some girl on my Facebook.

To be fair, the speaker rumour was why most sensible media outlets were cautious in reporting the incident. Even people in the arena were tweeting that's what they thought it was.

The training exercise photo that was doing the rounds is the absolute pits though. As bad as it gets. Shouldn't be too difficult for Twitter to find the 'source' of it.

Tim Farron pays tribute
Tim Farron, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, has said:

This is a shocking and horrific attack targeting children and young people who were simply enjoying a concert.

My deepest sympathies are with the victims, and with families who have lost loved ones, as well as those desperately waiting for news.

I would like to pay tribute to the bravery and dedication of the emergency services.

This is an attack on innocent people and the nation is united both in its grief and its determination to stand up to this deplorable attack.

Disgrace. Should wait for the facts before issuing ridiculous statements like this.
