It used to just be about the football. I'd expect a post match review to reflect that. instead, it was a love in for a club that finished below us in the league last season.
Everton hasn't been about football for 35 years. It's been about the egos of our owners and the acceptance of mediocrity by our fans.
The United love-in has always been there. When they were crap, they were still spoken of as "contenders". It's not only the media parrotting their lines, though. Some of our own fans, who should know better, routintely refer to United as the "biggest club in the world". It's like they take some weird national pride in this propaganda and have never heard of Real Madrid. It's also cover for accepting our place in the world and staying in our lane. Up to the formation of the Premier League, we had won two more top-flight titles than the "biggest club in the world" and routinely beat them. Back then, we bristled at their propaganda. The last 35 years have simply exacerbated our utter irrelevance.
This is the challenge for the Friedkins. Up to now, they're nowhere near up to it.
