One question.

Why?

Now the Macs are x86 based, they are just fancy PC's running Leopard. Why buy a Mac? I just don't see the value in it.

Example:

This Mac, introduced in April 08:

Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch (08) Specs

Here are the important bits:

24" Widescreen
Intel E8400 CPU @ 3.06 Ghz
2 Gb RAM (PC6400 DDR2)
500Gb HDD
GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB RAM

How much? $2100

$2100!!! That is a lot of money!

So, lets build a PC that hits all the same specs, and I am picking the Gucci stuff where available:

24" Widescreen
Intel E8400 CPU @ 3/06 Ghz
4 Gb Corsair XMS RAM (PC6400 DDR2)
1Tb HDD
GeForce 8800 GTS 512 Mb RAM
Blu-Ray burner
Antec P180 Case
Corsair 1000 watt Power Supply
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Soundcard
Asus P5Q Deluxe Motherboard

And then add in all the other stuff required to get a fully working computer (keyboard, mouse network card etc etc)

How much???

$1872. That is $200 LESS for a better specced machine.

So to all you "Well, my Mac can run Windows too" guys, why not buy a PC and put Leopard onto your PC! It can and has been done! And at $129 for a full license of Leopard, you are still coming in way under the Apple price, plus you can upgrade! Apple solders the video cards to the motherboard in their machines!

So, the conclusion for this MAC bashing thread (Not the software), buy a PC and put Leopard on it!

Apple supporters - put that in your pipe and smoke it :P

*Sits down and awaits Apple owner responses

You can upgrade the RAM and the processor and the HDD, but you are stuck with the video card and there are no other on-board slots free.

Either way, why pay more money for the same gear? Because it is in a white box with an Apple logo on it? Do it on the cheap, you know it makes sense!

Macs are great, especially for Video/Music editing. And especially with the Quad Core processors in them now (an extra £1000!)

WHICH IS MY POINT Dom. Don't buy a Mac. Buy a PC and put the Mac OS on it (Leopard) Get much more machine for your money and still do all the (gay)Mac [Poor language removed].

dylan your price for a pc was 200 dollars less, but with my macbook i got a free ipod and a free printer (total $400 rebate)

for that i got a machine that can also duel boot, and since i already had an xp disk with my home computer i didn't have to buy a new disk so its already set to duel boot (exclusively for sopcast and fifa purposes).

i've had my mac for about a month, and i can honestly say i fell in love with it pretty quickly. things seem to work a lot better tbh. it was a bit hard to get used to, but once i realized that i didn't need to overthink things the way i do with a PC, it all kinda fell into place.

i think it really is just a matter of opinion, a lot of people may just want to run their favourite OS on the laptop for which it was designed, they may not be tech savvy enough to install a duel booting machine. windows provides no program to show you how to install leapord so it is a bit difficult, but mac's come with the bootcamp utility that walks you through everything. its also nice never having to deal with viruses or anything.

and while i think preference in OS is a matter of opinion, i've never known anyone who bought a mac and didn't love it, the only people who dislike mac's seem to be the ones who made up their minds that they don't like macs ahead of time.

as for the video card, don't quote me on this, but i believe that the video card is NOT integrated for the macbook pro, just for regular macbooks and the macbook air.

My laptop cost me £100 ($200...ish), and it's been working fine with no problems for about a year now.

Eat that Mac users. (y)

I don't really see the point in spewing all my hard earned cash on a laptop just cos it's white and shiny. But then again I have no clue about the technical side of things. As long as it works, it is fine for me.

I've had this little ibook since its first release in May, 2001. It was expensive at the time but since I've never had a single problem, repair, breakdown, virus, spyware or any of the [Poor language removed], then I'd say it was worth the money. It's slowed down a bit lately merely because the web has got so much more on it. But I wouldn't swap it for the world. And in the time that I've had this my wife has been through 2 PCs, and is now on her 3rd. Basically, she has spent nearly double the amount in cash, even though each computer was much cheaper. Oh yeah, and it does look pretty cool. It's a bit gay looking but in a nice camp, Ooo Mrs. type of way. (y)

Ahh, I wasn't talking about Macbooks. IMO the Mac laptops are better than the PC counterparts by far. I am talking desktops. And note the $200 cheaper price was for a superior specced machine. If I specced it just like the Mac it would have been EVEN cheaper.

That was from a different era Neb, that was the PowerPC era. I am talking now with Apples being x86 based. Plus, your botched PC's are branded, correct?

Dylan, not to annoy you or anythign, but im about to buy:

:P

It won't annoy me, it's your money. I just wanted to present an alternative to paying too much for the hardware.

Remember you can still run the Mac Operating System on your PC.

ah okay, well i know feck all about the desktop computers, a lot of people call the notebooks macbooks though (whether it's correct or not), so that's why i got mixed up, as i understood it, i thought the other computers were called iMac's not sure though.

also, you can call this a victory for the anti-mac crusade, but i downloaded firefox on my macbook today, its a tiny bit slower than safari but i just can't go without the add-ons

and if you are comparing the home computers, do they even have any desktop PCs with the same design as the macbooks where the CPU and motherboard are all integrated with the monitor, it may be a little bit of a useless trick and i'm sure it just makes it a bitch to fix, but at the very least its something that, as far as i know, you can't get from PC

There are actually lots of fancy cases you can get traditional PC's. Although the whole integrated things is what makes owning a Mac so expensive. It makes them insanely difficult to upgrade, and to fix as you said.

Now I know these are user created cases, but it shows what can be achieved if you put a little effort into making a computer case (and frankly, some of these I would love to have and other I would loathe)
