Is this not what being a successful club is all about. Younger players have to be very good to take the place of the older established one's. With Baines in the team Garbutt has to get to that level to take his place. I'd be happy with a first team all of Baines' ability with players of Garbutt's potential trying to oust them. Surely the craft of a good manager is to keep the younger players interested and vying to replace the top quality ones. If Garbutt, or any of the others, can't do that then maybe they aren't good enough. Having said that I do think he is good enough.
It's such a shame that the U21/reserves cannot attract a better audience. There are players who are needed by a club as cover for their top players but cannot guarantee them a game. Everton cannot afford to let a player like Garbutt go, but you could understand that he wouldn't want to 'rot in the reserves' for ever. It's tough that it's first team or bust.

.....the rewards are so great. If he runs his contract down and goes on a Bosman he could pocket a £1m signing fee, double his salary and get 1st team football with win bonuses etc.

How can he hope to get all that if he hasn't even featured in our first team?

He's not going to get a £1m signing fee taking a move to Huddersfield or Bolton.

....you might be right but I suspect a Premier manager might take a punt on him. Even if he goes Championship he will pocket a tidy sum.

Can't say I have watched too much of him ,just a few England games but he certainly doesn't look like a premiership quality defender to me. He has a wand of a left foot, but looks physically weak, not too quick and ball watches a lot.
