Looking ahead to the summer

I would like to see a big summer clear out.

Distin
Hibbert
Gibson
Pienaar
Alcaraz
Howard
McGeady
Osman
Barry
Mirallas

We may as well try and do it all in one summer and start promoting some of the U21s through. Unless we're in the Champions League we won't have to play Europe next season so won't need a huge squad.

We will however need to buy a young right back and even assuming Lennon stays 2 wingers - Henen is probably a year away from playing regularly. Kone is fine as backup to Rom for one more season. Barkley and Ledson can provide cover for Besic and McCarthy however I think we do need a play maker.

I also don't want to see any more deadwood brought in. I'm OK with Lennon but the likes of Kone, McGeady and Alcaraz just aren't good enough no matter what the price. I would genuinely like to see kids get their minutes - it might weaken us slightly in those games but long term it would be great development and save a bundle on wages.
7 names on that list I would be happy getting rid of for free. Even to just lower the wage bill..and my blood pressure ;)

I don't think the squad does need an overhaul to be honest.

Howard/Robles(would be my no1) is fine for the GK
Need a back-up RB for Coleman
Stones/Jagielka/New CB/Alcaraz is fine for CB
Baines/Oviedo is fine for LB

CM: Barry/McCarthy/Osman/Besic/Ledson? (for 2 spots I think that covers us well)
Wingers is where we need good investment: Once Kev leaves we will only be left with McGeady really, shame too as Pienaar has been a great servant but seems to now cease to exist. 2/3 wingers will need to come in
AMC: Barkley/Naismith to fight it out
Forwards: Lukaku/Kone/McAleny/Long......probably could do with another forward, an Ings type of player who will look to get in behind.

Gibson is the only player I'd sell.
Distin won't get another deal i suspect.
I have no idea what's happening with Mr Hibbert.

Summary: we need a centre half, a kid right back, a few wingers (one direct perhaps, one a Pienaar type) and a striker.

Bulk sales and then bulk purchases will only lead to QPR-type catastrophes imo. We need to keep the likes of Osman, Jagielka, Howard, Baines because that's where the team spirit comes from, keeps us being just a team of uncaring mercenaries.

I think Coleman will stay, he loves us... As for Kev a top 6 or 7 finish along with a
Europa league win could convince him to stay....
Coleman is on a long contract, we dont have to sell unless we get a crazy offer. Mirallas is not going to resign so if we exercise the additional year we should probably be looking at moving him along to maximise his fee

Not if it's done properly.

The likes of Pienaar, Alcaraz, Distin, Alcaraz can go and nobody would bat an eyelid. Moving on players who are just a drain on resources such as Hibbert, perhaps Kone, Osman due to his injuries would simply be good business sense, even if we don't get much money for them.

It's about identifying targets and bedding them into the squad early. We should know which players are being released now, and bringing in two to three players to challenge for a starting place isn't too many.

We'd still have Jagielka, Coleman, Howard, Baines, McCarthy, Barry, Stones, Naismith, McGeady (sob) et al in the squad to ensure everybody keeps their feet on the ground and nobody is here for a free ride.

It's a one-time overhaul needed, not season on season and each and every transfer window.

Either do I think we need a squad overhaul but we aren't playing in Europe next season unless it's the champions league so we don't need a big squad. I'm not saying we should replace them. In fact it's quite the opposite. I'm saying we shouldn't and let their minutes go to the U21s in the positions where they're ready to make the step up (Browning, Galloway, Ledson, Henen). We still have the heart of the team in McCarthy, Jags, Stones, Coleman and Baines who are all leaders.

We do however need 2 quality wingers and a play-maker style winger like Coutinho however since there's no chance of Naismith being sold 2 out of 3 would do me.

Summer, desperately need to get rid of the following:

Distin
Hibbert
Gibson
Pienaar
Alcaraz

That's five major has-been players off the books and a total of easily over 150k p/w off the wages, so 7.5m a year saved instantly.

Then I'd like to see the following moved on:

Howard
McGeady
Naismith
Kone
Osman

However, you cannot expect the manager to shift 10 players, but think we could see Howard and Osman go, to the MLS and retiring, respectively. So we're 7 players down and around 10m down in wages, but still not really missing anybody as none of them are any good in the first place.

New TV deal, possibly sign one of Lennon/Atsu for cheap, and then look to invest in a good CB, a flying winger and a striker. 20m net spend should be available, but obviously won't be.

I reckon, to get the players we need in, the manager will cash in on either Stones or Barkley, sadly. Possibly 25m for Stones, would be very sad to see him go.

I'll tell you something for nothing though, if we go into next season with players like Steven Naismith starting games, it's going to be another big disappointment of a campaign.

I'd keep Alcaraz, McGeady, definitely keep Naismith (although shouldn't be starting next season) and probably keep Kone for another year as well providing he is 100% over his knee problems.

Agree with getting rid of the rest.

Why do people want to sell Mirallas ffs.
I don't want to sell him, I'd honestly be so shattered if he left.

Realistically we'll know by summer if he'll re-sign or not if we know he won't is rather sell him and actually get some decent coin rather than have a player who doesn't want to be here and then get [Poor language removed] all for them.
