The great city of Liverpool began as a tidal pool next to the Mersey. It was probably called the lifer pol meaning muddy pool. There may have been a hamlet at Liverpool before the town was founded in the 13th century. It is not mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) but it may have been to small to merit a mention of its own.
Why is it called Liverpool, was there a pool of livers lying around when someone decided to name the place?
Silly name for a town.
I would have called it Tittybongoolagong
Disputed origin .
Some cite the Celtic , rock pool ,- muddy - or some such . Also , the weird nature of the Mersey and its tides , played into this theory .
The Pool of life thing came later , but Frank Carlisle , a local Historian , goes with the Liver, Lee-vah , - some sort of seaweed - as the actual lineage .
Others disagree .
Then you come to Everton , ie, Higher Town . Town on the top of the hill - brow . Everton brow , etc .
Gotta love it though .
Oh , an' Im after a Liver , if you here of anyone , ....
Woolongong , or Wogga Wogga , shirley ???
Silly name for a town.
I would have called it Tittybongoolagong
