All hinges on a strong ref.
As long as our rhythm and focus arent completely upset by a shocking decison (Arsenal away, United away, every derby in living memory) then we have a real chance.
Our midfield is infinitely stronger than theirs.
Agree with the first paragraph, but this narrative around our midfield is the exact kind of thinking that sets us up for disappointment. We have an infinitely stronger midfield yet we’re 11 points behind them in the league? The two don’t mix. On paper we probably had a “better” midfield than United as well and we still lost (with some awful refereeing as well mind you).
I don’t actually think midfield is the key in this game either- they’ve been messing around with theirs all season, changing players and formations and by all accounts their new signings have been very poor- yet they’re still second. They’re clearly doing some things right. The big question is whether we can get at their defence which has undoubtedly been quite solid all season and create some good chances. Press high and aggressively much like Red Star did and we should have some joy.
From our own perspective though we haven’t played an open game in this fixture since the Martinez years- it’s reduced the number of goals conceded, but we’ve still only losses and draws as we’re never going to win shutting up shop from minute 1.
I just hope (and expect) Silva sticks to his principles and doesn’t change too much for this one game. Some pragmatism is fine, but we should be treating this game just like Chelsea away. Go in with the same attitude and mentality and we’ll be off to a better start than in years before a ball has even been kicked in Sunday.
