The most ridiculous thread ever started. I’m surprised tbh.....we would be changing names every 25-50:years as each name fell to the latest pc culture.......goodbye Saville row.......

Jesus wept!

In what crazy right wing world is anti-slavery described as "the latest PC culture"

Oh and Pete anti-slavery has been a pretty popular position for more than 25-50 years!

Hi @chicoazul when are the previews coming back?

Voted no because firstly re-writing history is rarely a good idea and denies future generations the chance to learn from it. Secondly, it's a facile and banal piece of gesture politics. The streets are named for those people because of the amount of (ill-gotten) wealth they invested back into the city. If you want to start down that road, you better be prepared to knock down a rather large number of buildings.

We have had this same discussion in Bristol for years and years. And in the end, it was generally accepted that no one these days knows why a street, a concert hall, a statue, or a clock tower was named anyrate. It was just what it was called.

And this in a city that was built on slavery, tobacco, and sherry. And also still has streets called Blackboy Hill and Whiteladies Road.

Basically, they arent honoured anymore, they are just there.
Kunta Kinte likes this.

No. For two main reasons.

1 - People don't have a clue why the street names are what they are by and large - I'd guess 99% of people.

2 - When people do, they can then learn about that period of history and understand the context of why what happened did happen. Simply trying to erase history does nothing - learn from it instead.

Indeed, my view of getting rid of them is an attempt to try and pretend it didn't happen. What good does that do anyone?

Exactly; would a militant left Council...or just the standard leftish Council for that matter want to rename all those streets named after minor tory / royal private secretary/ functionary / civil servants...although tbf, there are streets named Ramsey and MacDonald in the same area.

We should rename St. Domingo’s Church while we’re at it.

The island of Saint Domingo (now the Dominican Republic) in the Caribbean was a major centre for the slave trade and the original church was built by people whom had made their fortunes in that particular trade and decided to name their church in its honour :)
