I know it's unrealistic, but couldn't we just offer Schalke a relatively small amount of money, like £5 million or something, in this transfer window? Surely Schalke would rather have £5 million now, than nothing this summer?

If Holtby can be had for a small fee in this window, then why on earth would Spurs risk losing him instead of just signing him now ? After all, they'll be paying a hefty signing on fee when he's a free agent anyway.

Schalke have no reason to accept a small fee for him now, Holtby staying and contributing to their Champions League push is worth far more than £5m at this point in time. Missing out on that costs over £10m.
