Lots of stats floating about on toffeeweb and whilst it is nice to see we should not be getting carried away with the fact it is week 5 of 38 and although undefeated (and that does sound nice) we are 6th and one defeat is a big drop, as is one win for a team below us.

Don't want to sound like a defeatist, but it is the first stage of what will be a long hard season and hope we are there or thereabouts with a new manager etc and if this is the future then am very happy so far, but at the end of the day this is Everton and she has a habit of letting you down (then I put my bullet proof vest and helmet on and await the onslaught).

...suspect most aren't getting carried away, we are not deluded but there is a bit of promise and we should acknowledge that. It has been a bit slow at times but we are in a period of transition and the squad is arguably stronger than last season. Fellaini has gone but we certainly appear to have more options in midfield and the bit of oomph up front we've been longing for.

We are Everton, therefore there's always a harsh reality waiting just around the corner, I fully expect Earth to come rapidly into view later this evening. It's the Everton way.

To dream the impossible dream - Winning the League Cup
To fight the unbeatable foe - any of The Big 4 at home
To bear with unbearable sorrow - The thought that Baines may ever leave
To run where the brave dare not go - Into the Park End to get naughty

To right the unrightable wrong - Of not winning across the park in over a decade
To be better far than you are - we're plucky underdogs!
To try when your arms are too weary - Leon, sweet, sweet Leon
To reach the unreachable star - 4th in the league!

This is my quest, to follow that star
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To be willing to give when there's no more to give
To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live

And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

YOU SEE! It's about us, mate. We're going down in legend. They'll make a film with Ryan Gosling playing Naismith.

Think we are quite capable of extending our unbeaten run on Monday. Newcastle really aren't looking great and Everton at night in Goodison are a very very difficult team to beat. I'd just like us to wake up quicker in games. We've been so sluggish in the first half of our games, bar Chelsea.
Even so, id regard this as a solid start, which is beyond the wildest dreams of most of us, given how crap we've been in previous seasons. But only a solid start. We can definitely play better, we've yet to field our strongest team and it feels like we are starting to get used to the system a little more. We could also play worse, so managing my expectations, but I've been impressed at the start and we have the capability to get better, which is promising.

How much is it dreaming? the way the club played to close out the last game, when the new lids took the pitch, it was beastly.

Just a newbie Yank, but watching the Park the Bus match against Cardiff was frustrating. Owned the game, couldn't finish.

Chelsea was brilliant, but I recall a lot of gripping, sweating, nervous moments when it seemed as though they were hanging in there. The end couldn't come fast enough.

But the second half against West Ham just felt inevitable. And when the bottom dropped out, they gave us five minutes to feel miserable before reasserting that inevitable feeling.

Since the window they've notched a home win against a top notch foe and the squad's first come from behind road win since January.

So why not get excited?

I'm not getting carried away, but we should also dream. Not accept any "5 year plan" bullcrap because that is just an excuse for current failures. Remember how Wenger came in at Arsenal after they finished 6th, and then within a year had them challenging for the league?

It can be done.
We have a squad of good players who have shown that they can mix it with anyone. The challenge is to get them to do it consistently week in week out. Take these players, release the shackles on them, and watch them fly.

I am an Evertonian. I swing from ridiculous expectation, to shoulder-shrugging "never going to happen" on a daily basis.

Therefore I am prepared for later. Whatever.

(But we will win, BTW)

I think we should get carried away, enjoy the good days as much as possible, we deserve it.

This, with feckin' massive blue church bells on...I've had enough of negativity to last a lifetime and I'm worn out. Nobody that's followed this club for any length of time is deluded but I know a good chunk of us are sick to the back teeth of the little devil on the shoulder. He can [Poor language removed] right off...
