Sad way to go out if true. It wouldn't be too hard to believe that if the Osman injury was missed/under-estimated then it could well have been the cause of some heads rolling.
Martinez has said that he picked it up against West Ham (22/11). If this is true and not a mistake, then it means that he played in the next 4 games. Wolfsburg (27/11 - 59 mins), Spurs (30/11 - 29 mins), Hull (3/12 - 90 mins) and Man City (6/12 - 2 mins). He hasn't been seen since then.
Originally (18/12) it didn't appear as though Martinez thought it was that bad and this is what was reported.
"Leon Osman, however, remains a “real doubt” for Saturday but Martinez added that the midfielder was “progressing well” from a long-standing foot problem and he will be assessed day by day."
(24/12) Martinez added: "Tony Hibbert still needs a couple of weeks. He picked up a knock in training so he is out of the squad for the next two games. Leon Osman is very similar."
The tone then changed.
(30/12) “Leon Osman is a real worry with a split tendon in his foot which he picked up against West Ham and he will be out for a while."
(6/1) "10-12 weeks out."
(9/1) “Leon Osman has had a split tendon in his foot and so that was always going to be a long-term problem. He has escaped surgery and that was good news but at the moment it is still quite early in his rehab and I don’t expect Leon to be back until a further date.”
And now this latest very serious rumour. What with the record amount of muscle injuries to half the squad, our ability to prevent, assess and recover players looks to be all over the place. This is so, so important. Not only for physical realities and performance but also for the confidence and psychological aspect of recovering from injuries. If the players don't have confidence in the staff/procedures being employed then this is a further hindrance to any recovery. Alternatively, it could be that the players have been ruling the roost and rushing back earlier than they perhaps should be due to a lack of strong leadership within the medical department.
