Met him once. His track suit was to big for him.Thats madel that I've just checked and he did have a decent record at Chelsea and QPR on loan as well. In fact it look like he banged goals in everywhere but Everton lol
Think Howie says in his book that Sharpy was more a scorer of great goals than a great goal scorer. Said he should have scored many more in his career.I would loved to have been able to ask Howard Kendal this one. The answer would have been educational. Unfortunately too late now
If I can remember rightly Hatton, can't remember his first name would have been a good foil for big Bob, as he was a bit of a tough nut. I can remember me arl fella describing him as a hatchet man or am I getting him confused with some one else.Hatton? wasn't Taylor the winger who went on to be PFA chief?
Why couldn't you have gone the bog 4 times in the Derby. That was some goal that Barlow one against Ipswich.
I remember him scoring twice away against Ipswich as well in a rare 2-0 away win. Missed both of the goals as I'd gone to the toilet twice lol
Think he could handle himself from what I can recall!!If I can remember rightly Hatton, can't remember his first name would have been a good foil for big Bob, as he was a bit of a tough nut. I can remember me arl fella describing him as a hatchet man or am I getting him confused with some one else.
I think you've got it spot on mate. More or less. I loved Latch but he let us down a few times, a lot of the times in Derby matches when there where times when he allowed their defenders, particularly Tommy Smith to bully him and he missed a great chance to win one once at the pit when he tried to lob clemence not knowing that clemence had made to come out but then gone back towards goal taking the ball quite easily. But then again Sharpy did the same probably more often. Missing some easy chances in the Derby. Not allowing them to bully him but missing a lot of great chances against them, some of them easy ones. Yes it's not all about the derbies, I'm just using them as examples, but as for who was the best then the answer is in the stats. It's got to be Sharpy. 2nd best goal scorer of all time. League champion twice. FA cup winner. ECW. The proof of the pudding and all that.
Stuart is a nice genuine fella, always did his best and you can’t ask for more than that, as you say Dario he could take the mick out of himself, so others having a go won’t bother him all that much, and he could always point to wearing the first team shirt and very proud to do so.Spoke to Stuey at a sportsmans do he was on with Sheeds and Pyscho Pat,the MC kept saying two Everton legends and Stuart Barlow, probably true but a bit tight as he was only filling in as someone else had dropped out lol , anyhow when I was chatting to him I told him I remembered his goal at Goodison the following midweek against Ipswich which was a fantastic strike after the "Rosenthal" derby at the pit ,I couldn't remember although I was there but Stuey told me after a drab first half,Howie brought him on, and suddenly we started opening them up, he had about four one on ones which he got in on but muffed them all,of course they won it in injury time with their one chance of the second half, in Stueys own words he went home and just didn't want to leave the house as he felt he had truly let us down, he went into training on Monday and Howie was naming his team for the next night against Ipswich,in his words it was the only game in his life he ever wanted to be left out for but Howie told him,"Stuey, you're in" he scored that screamer and we were all like,Christ why couldn't you have done that Saturdaylolanyhow he may have been...errr not the best to have played for us, but I got the impression he gave everything he could have which is all you can ask, was a top fella who could take the mickey out of himself and still a big Evertonian.
You know what, been pondering on this one and I may be getting Hatton mixed up with a fella called Roger Hynd. Anyone remember him.If I can remember rightly Hatton, can't remember his first name would have been a good foil for big Bob, as he was a bit of a tough nut. I can remember me arl fella describing him as a hatchet man or am I getting him confused with some one else.
I remember Hynd, bit of a yard dog. It was Bob Hatton and he was the workhorse upfront for Latchford and Trevor Francis but a good player too. Birmingham had a good side back then. You know what, been pondering on this one and I may be getting Hatton mixed up with a fella called Roger Hynd. Anyone remember him.
I think the best all round centre forward I saw at goodison was Andy Gray. Unplayable on his day. Made Sharpy the player he became as well.Remember that Anfield game well. Also remember Mr Latchford had a smile on his gob after the miss. I think G S was the better player overall but the best slotter I've seen at GP was Lineker.
Latch. Sharpe had a great couple of seasons then seemed to be up for the scrap rather than the goals. Latch also did it at Swansea of all teams as they were being relegated.Controversial one perhaps,
Latch a total predator in the Penalty area, he only really existed in there and I can't really recall him linking play up too much,I am probably incorrect but I can only recall him knocking one in from outside the area(Leicester away 5-1 1977?)played in some good sides and some poor teams in his seven year spell with us, close but never in a team that got over the line trophy wise unfortunately, he truly deserved something tangible from it.We all loved Latch back then.
Sharpy, our second highest goalscorer behind Dixie, although he spent three or four years longer with us than Latch(probably Latch would have had that record if he had a longer career with us),again played in some good(very good!!)sides and some poorish ones too, more of a scorer of great goals than a great goalscorer in my humble opinion, if it was instinctive,he would finish it, if Sharpy had time to think the chance could be gone!!Very good target man who could bring others into play superbly.
Personally I would go for Sharpy........just,others may well disagree but that's what it's all about eh?
Maybe our fine Mods would want to set a poll on this?
This.Agreed I think. Heart says big Bob, but head says Sharpy.![]()
