Last Film You Watched

Watched Blade Runner last night in preparation to see the new one.

Only saw it once in the mid 90's but was a teenager at the time and never appreciated its greatness.

Its a stunning movie to watch with a soundtrack that is sublime. It is a classic and looks timeless.

Ps - having seen the trailers for the new one, I'm hoping against hope that it matches the first one.

I think Ryan Gosling is a good choice as the lead, as he's an excellent actor, but the trailer left me feeling a little bit underwhelmed tbh.

Hologram for the King (Tom Hanks, 2016).

Enjoyed the whole American in the Middle East cliche, and after living her for 7 years, it's funny to see the cultural clash that I remember when I arrived, but to which I have now thankfully acclimated.

A Ghost Story

Loved it. About death, the effect it has on people and it's surroundings, and closure. Odd how sad you feel for a person with a blanket over him.

Also confirms that Rooney Mara is the best person in the world.

Finally got round to watching this last night - Film4, so it'll be on again soon.

Completely bonkers and entertaining.

Two rival cowboy gangs and a group of Native Americans join together to battle it out with a load of aliens who are after sucking the planet dry of gold for their fuel.

Stellar cast inc, Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell.

Funny, violent and great special effects.

always enjoy keeping up with you movie buffs. here be the fillems we consumed this year, we've been using our old beamer for about 3 years now, still holding up well after one lamp change. It's a massive screen for little cash, plus a bit for el-cheapo 5.1 boxes which also do a job. All you need is a blank white wall and you've got proper cinema at home...it's stupidly-addictive! Sell that flatscreen.

Wild Tales - 9/10 - could watch short stories like these all day. They saved the best 'til last (bonkers wedding).
Twin Peaks Fire walk with me - 8/10 - poor girl, great series.
10 Cloverfield Lane - 8/10 - wow, I wasn't expecting that ending. Really good all round.
Misery - 8/10- actually disturbing and really well-made.
On Body and Soul - 7/10 - quirky take on standard movie romance. Dodgy age-difference tho'.
Alice in Wonderland (1951) - 7/10 - fun and indeed trippy take on the rabbit hole classic...over too soon.
Frantic - 6/10 - started really well, but got a bit popcorny later.
The Revenant - 6/10 - Di Caprio is average at best in this, and the film itself is a little boring. But really nice camera work.
The Black Hole - 5/10 - childhood favourite not as good as I remember it shocker. Couple of strong scenes still.
Predestination - 4/10 - initially intriguing, but by the end you might wanna vomit.
Gone with the Wind - 4/10 - some cringy racist moments, and a dull long thud of a film with a bitch of a main character. Some nicely-filmed scenes tho'.

mostly skipped through these:

Zodiac - 3/10 - what a boring-arse film. Started well enough.
Where the Wild Things are - 2/10 - annoying kid experiences dodgy monsters...totally charmless.
Carriers - 1/10 - Chris Pine is one of the most punchable actors out there, and this film stinks.
Vinzent - 1/10 - awful cheap wannabe-arty attempt to mimic Lynchian vibes.
Red Planet - 1/10 - what a load of utter crap.
Attack the Block - 1/10 - fancy making a film about the London innit subculture and then making them petty criminals who rob and threaten women? What bollocks! So disappointed. These kind of bruvs used to come to my place for spliffs, pirate radio & Tekken and it was all good, so I was hoping for something more relateable and likeable from this film. It's frankly sick...culturally counter-productive even. Couldn't care less about the fighting-aliens bit.

also a few attempts to get some horror cheap thrills but none of these were really scary:

The Skeleton Key - 8/10 - well-told and with a great ending.
Let the right one in - 7/10 - offbeat vampire romance, no cheese.
The Mothman Prophecies - 7/10 - atmospheric chiller.
Arachnophobia - 7/10 - i love spiders but the ladies in my house don't...so that was a funny night.
The Visit - 7/10 - almost brilliant but the two kids are cringe.
1408 - 6/10 - some originality and cool scenes, not much else.
Subject Two - 6/10 - ultra-low budget but clever story. A bit like a Frankenstein version of Primer.
Banshee Chapter - 6/10 - peaked my DMT's machine elves & Numbers Station interest, but couldn't quite do them justice. Still decent.
28 Days Later - 5/10 - the zombie-apocalypse thing was good but the 2nd-half was the same old tired 'but people are even worse' meme.
The Conjuring - 5/10 - bog-standard bang-average predictable haunted-house horror well-made.
The Witch - 4/10 - god-this, god-that, then some naked witches...that's it.
Crimson Peak - 4/10 - nice colours, the rest is forgettable bland.

(thanks to my bad nerd imdb profile for keeping track). 6/10+ are worth a watch despite reservations. This year's watches lacking a few more killer entries, unfortunately.

Absolutely despised this film when I saw it ages ago.

Might give it another go though.
