Last Film You Watched

Great film, one of the few great sequels but is probably the root of all evil, film wise.

The first movie that I can think of that went all in on CGI and opened the flood gates for an awful lot of trash to come through.

Think it was the conversation the other day about Indiana Jones and it set me thinking. Before CGI, the limitations of practical effects meant focus was on character and story.
CGI meant any talentless idiot could churn out a 90 min CGI fest (Michael Bay, Paul Anderson) and call it a film.

Shame Rea

Not really. There are loads of crap films pre-CGI where character and story was very much a secondary concern and they instead concentrated on explosions, fighting, gore and sex scenes. Lots of talentless idiots churned out garbage and called it a film.

And who is this 'talentless' Paul Anderson fella? You don't mean Paul Thomas Anderson do you? Apologies if I'm mistaken but I'd never have had him down as a CGI crazy hack.

And while the Transformers movies are reputedly CGI garbage (I've never seen them) Michael Bay is still a practical effects nut. Something like Ambulance (2022) may not be a masterpiece in many people's eyes but it's absolutely loaded with practical effects and location stuff. Then you've got Bad Boys and The Rock.

There's two. The good one PTA, responsible for 'Boogie Nights' and 'There will be blood'.

Then there is the other one, PWSA, responsible for 'monster hunter', a litany of woeful 'resident evil' films, and the absurdly crud 'event horizon'.

The former shows what film making can be and that it takes talent.

The latter shows that fools with a few dollars will shell out for any old crud, and a career can be made from making any old hotchpotch - often but not exclusively starring nic coppola.

Ah right - my bad. Thought it was a spicy take. That said I didn't mind the first Resident Evil - garbage b-movie for sure but fun enough.

But then I view the Cannon Films logo as a seal of quality so I'm probably not the best judge. Shallow pre-CGI garbage at it's finest.

I thought I'd have a nostalgia watch this afternoon.

'Razorback' from 1984, directed by Russel Mulcahy of 'Highlander' game, and you can tell as the same style oozes.

Anyway, a bit cheesy, not great effects, but it's Jaws with a pig.

I enjoyed it.

He's found a quite magical formula, he's managed to cast his wife in his god awful films and they've both prolonged a career from frankly very little. Not nic coppola little, but still very little indeed. She was only any good in 'The fifth element', in which she barely spoke and just looked pretty. Which she was, very.

I suppose in the grander scheme of things, if it takes a hundred or two hundred films to be made for us to get a good one, then it's a price worth paying so long as it's not me suffering through them. Someone has to write and direct them, so maybe the system works in a round about way.
