I think that's fair. There is a reason Real Madrid didn't move for him this summer and took a proven failure in Benitez over him. I know Manchester United really wanted him post SAF, but that was because it was between him and Moyes, not because they thought he was as good as Ferguson.

I think he fits the FSG model very well and is an upgrade on Rodgers. But the system they are using is flawed largely because Liverpool in their ignorance can't see it doesn't work for them.

As for Klopp I can see major meltdowns. The problem is in the short term the Kopites will love it. They love that siege mentality and will think it's a sign of fear from other clubs, not feelings of derision and pity.

In the longer term Klopp has the potential to really divide. Much like Rodgers he increasingly had to start picking fights with people in the club. Klopp will generate more loyalty than Rodgers though, as he has actually won things so a layer of gullible idiots will see no wrong with him.

We are going to have to wait for about 2 years of cringey annoying hell to get to that point though.
He strikes me as a German Martin O'Neill

I've heard Sherwood, Kevin Keegan.

For all those reasons I find the appointment to be very odd. I keep expecting this to fall apart any second. It's an unlikely match up.

As you say, he needs a familiar infrastructure around him and time to be a success...and that's IF he can get the hang of this league's football culture...no German beside Magath has been here and tried it in the top flight, maybe for good reason?

I think we can be very little Englander about the premier league. There's no doubt the German league is very strong. I think Magath is a bit of an outlier. That Fulham side was in deep trouble. But he failed to do what say a Moyes did with us, or Allardyce managed to do most places he goes.
There are lots of talented managers in Germany of which Klopp is certainly one. I wanted Tuchel to be our replacement for Moyes.

However as a society and in terms of their football Germany is massively different to England. I think in Germany managers are given more time, there is more emphasis on coaching and development/teamwork and less on big name players. Liverpool like to think they fall into that category but they are the absolute opposite, for cringey overreactions on players ability and continually seeking to list players as "world class".

He is taking a side on who are at a similar level to the Dortmund side he had but with less promising youngsters. He has 4 sides above him who are the equivalent of the Bayern side he faced. It took him 3 years to finish above Bayern. He won't get that long with FSG.

Liverpool fans, unlike Everton fans are unlikely to give him time and support when he really needs it. For all the hysteria around Martinez and Moyes we never got to the level of flying planes and our board act with a decent level of common sense.

By November the novelty will have worn off and they'll have a manager in place who has a lot to prove after last season's meltdown.

I just dont see him replicating anything like the type of success that he had in the Bundesliga - a league he was a manager in for 9 seasons before he achieved anything of note.

His record with Mainz was actually very good (even considering his relegation). It was very Moyes like, with a smaller team than Everton.

The worry I'd have over him is his last couple of years. He has slipped well down the pecking order in Germany and last season spent a lot of it fighting relegation. It suggests to me that he has been found out a bit.

Which in turn makes me think he'll do a pretty good job at first with them lot.

Maybe 1 or 2 seasons of decent progress, that we will all hate.

Then he'll get found out over here. Which will be boss.

Would love it if he was just rubbish from the off. The kopites would be caught in one of their classic paradoxes where they want to be seen to be backing the manager but they all are tired of him after one bad season and want him out for the next flavour of the month. A bit like the way all of the RS in the media said an obligatory 'I was surprised by Brendan's sacking' before going on to allude that they don't really give one because Klopp is better. They all want to maintain this image of class and dignity FC but their short term lust for any success betrays them every single time. There is no 'Liverpool way' anymore, they are every bit as bad as Chelsea in how they operate.

There's every chance they might be crap mate. No matter how good/bad Klopp may be he still has to deal with those players who to put it kindly are a bit crap.

Ultimately they've had an upgrade on the manager front even someone like me can admit that .

Whether Klopp succeeds or not is however hugely speculative , like any appointment it's a risk . The fact they've appointed a bloke with a decent track record obviously decreases that risk but certainly doesn't it remove it.

Fingers crossed its another car crash though obviously .

Kopites acting like its a major coup. Everyone knew he could end up there when he declared he wanted his next appointment to be at a small club.
