Kieran Dowell

I feel while sometimes a loan can be good for certain players, i also think back to a year or so ago when tom davies made his everton debut as we were injury ravaged at the time.
Liam walsh and ryan ledson were both out on loan at the time and probably would of been selected ahead of davies if they were still at the club.
Davies got his chance and never looked back, ledson didnt see a path to the first team and walsh looks unlikely to be here in a year or so i reckon.
Its an out of sight out of mind sort of thing
I keep saying this but People need to start realising that just because they as fans are surprised by something, it doesn't mean the coaches who work with the players every day are.

A lot of fans thought ledson was the next big thing because his name had been bandied about a bit, but he was allowed to leave because the coaches thought he was a fair way away from a breakthrough not because they'd forgotten he existed.

Davies didn't get picked because we had an injury crisis, that's seemingly one of those weird mass misrememberings. When he made his debut we had cleverley, osman and Barkley on the bench - he was picked on merit.

I like dowell but i think some people hugely overrate his level of ability. Others have seen more of him than me so I bow to their knowledge but from what I've seen he's more bilyaletdinov than le tissier.

Lesson tilted hard, don't think he would have ever made it for us to be perfectly honest....

I think it's unfair to expect him to be playing consistently well at this point. I'd give him regular chances in the PL as players can sometimes relish the opportunity as seen recently

Very simple for me, the lads need double figures in goals and assists to get into the team. I like Dowell but that should be the standard for the positions he is competing for.
Double figures in goals + assists? I'd agree with that.

Double figures in each category is a tall order. Barkley couldn't get into double digits for either goals or assists last season and yet was one of our most influential players. In fact, he's never got double digits in either since he broke into the first team.

What he is at this point in his career is an option off the bench, nothing more if we have any aspirations of getting CL

Probably is but we should be able to get through in europe with him in the side and he will gain more from playing in a match like that than someone like McCarthy or Barry would. Nobody is expecting him to be starting the opening 6 league games but there are plenty of others (hopefully) in the opening few months where he can be used and not just off the bench.

A loan to where? Some Championship outfit where he'll learn nothing and just be targeted week in week out?

Better to let him stay in and around the likes of Rooney and our other talented players to learn first hand from them. Loaning this kid out to Championship riff raff would be an appalling mistake.
Agree with you there.

Championship is fine for blooding defensive minded players, especially for the physical
side of the game, but more creative players need to be around similar players.

Really hope Rooney takes Dowell under his wing and helps him learn how the bottle up that creativity to unleash at will!

That little dink into the box for Rooneys missed header is exactly the type of out-of-the-box creativity we've been missing since Arteta left.
If he can make the step up, we have a very good player on our hands.

But as we know with young players, it really can go either way.

Yep in both mate, I know Barkley hasn't, it doesn't mean it shouldn't be our standard.

Rooney and Gylfi are both capable of it. That should be the goal and standard to be expected. We have heavy lifting to do if we are going to spread the handicap from looseing Lukaku.

For any regular starter I couldn't agree anymore mate.

However not everyone is going to get a heap minutes, we can't expect a back up player to give us that kind of output on limited minutes and without a consistent run in the side. That's all Dowell could realistically be this season, a back up player. With the Europa League and is starting competitive matches in July we have to have a lot of options available.

If anyone looks at Dowell and thinks he's ready to be a good regular starter they're crazy but it's important to have backup options available and I feel Dowell is good enough to be used when we need to call apon him.

I take you point mate, but look at Belg Ken, he played in 65% of our games last season got 4 goals and 8 assists.

The standard is being raised as the quality is being brought in, it's a competitive environment and when you get the chance you have to produce.

I think this lad has potential to do really well in the game, if it all comes together.

But, and here's a question for those clamouring for him to start the season on our right hand side, will you be comfortable playing the likes of City, Chelsea, Spurs and United with him and Kenny as our right hand side? For me it's one or the other, and even then I wouldn't be 100% confident.
