I agree in a sense...more of a 'well we still have Dowell if we don't get Siggy' or 'not worried about losing Barkley because we have Dowell' type thing

The thing is people had to be out for Davies to get a look last year and he took it. If we keep putting layers in front of these lads, how will we ever really know? Most aren't as blindingly obvious as Rooney at 16.

I take your point and just to be clear I love it when the talent breaks through to the first team, Davies made last season very special...We should have more games this year though and Dowell can play for the first team as a youth player...we are moving players on too...can see him getting a look in alright...the rest is up to him, wouldn't want to be relying on him as a definite, same with Kenny though expect to see him feature too

Funny how a creative player gets pulled up for not running and tackling but a Gueye/Schneiderlin type won't get berated for not whipping dangerous crosses in or beating 2 men and then belting one in the top corner
Not been an Everton fan long? Those players absolutely do get stick for that. Unless you're a 9/10 for every attribute there's a section of the fanbase that will hound you mercilessly.

But they should be blindingly obvious to the coaches. You say Davies 'had to wait' but he was 17. He had been identified as someone capable of playing but was behind some others in the pecking order and had to wait for his chance - exactly as it should be. He was still chosen ahead of cleverley when we had him, and ahead of older players like Walsh and Williams as the coaches believed in him.

Dowell is a bit different. He wasn't given opportunities but others of the same age (DCL and lookman) were, in his position. It wasn't that the coaches wouldn't give youth a chance, but that they wouldn't give him a chance. There are obviously reasons for that, and it's why coaches get paid the big bucks to make decisions rather than giving every young player who wants one a game just in case they turn out better than expected.

Sorry I wasn't questioning your credentials, just pointing out that defensive players are absolutely not given a free pass on the attacking side of their game.

I know mate, was only messing. Re your point, do you really think it is equal though? I haven't witnessed any slating of Morgan or Gueye for not being creative enough (although being out of the country I don't get to GP very much so I'm talking mainly about these boards and other blues I know). Seems a bit disproportionate to me. Not just amongst blues either but across football. As Dave said earlier people seem to prefer an honest runner to a talented creative player sometimes.

I think much depends on how the team is performing really. If we're winning every week then attacking players will be enjoyed for what they are and people will love the work defensive players do. Start losing and their supposed failings will scrutinised a lot more.

McCarthy got all the same praise as gueye in his first season but when things went sour a year later everybody decided that just putting a shift in wasn't enough and he needed to contribute more. Also players like jagielka and Williams often have their distribution criticised regardless of their defensive qualities.

I agree with your general point though, the idea of judging an attacking player on the amount of ground they cover is mind boggling to me.
