And I'm sure they'll find a person to oversee those departments. It could even fall on the CEO to just be the top boss. A director of football is typically a transfer guru type where we basically have been running a sporting director model anyway. The director of football portion with regards to recruitment though isn't exactly difficult for Moyes. He planned our squads years in advance when he was first manager. I wouldn't have him as a sporting director but if they wanted to give him a fancy title of director of football where he's planning what the Everton squad of 1, 2, 3 years time looks like, then he could do that job imo.

Fwiw our data analytics department is seen as top class and essentially has been running itself under Reeves for the past few years. A big part of why I didn't mind if thelwell stayed was that he essentially just left people alone to do their job. Nothing much is going to change day to day short term as the departments all manage themselves and then report to Thelwell. The only real thing that needs addressing is the expiring contracts, which should fall on Moyes to decide.

The Ashworth comment was more to say that Everton could hire whoever is seen as the most experienced man for the job and it not be the right organisational fit -Although I've never been high on him - just because someone has or hasn't done a role similar at other clubs doesn't mean they're right for us.

A lot of this is redundant until we know what structure we employ. I doubt TFG will have pivoted from being reluctant to hire moyes as Head Coach to letting him run all football operations within the space of 2 months anyway.
Yeah true. I just posted it as a lot were saying Moyes should be DOF.

It’s a lot to take on though for a CEO to have all those departments reporting directly to them though IMO. Especially as CEOs in football tend to be business people rather than sports people

Yeah I’m sure Moyes can handle squad planning for the first team. But there are loads of other things a DOF does. Yes a DOF is essentially a “line manager” and there’s nothing wrong with that even though it doesn’t sound like a “proper football man” kind of job. But if KT is not doing it then someone will have to and I’m not sure if the right person for that is Moyes. He doesn’t have any experience overseeing an academy or a sports science or data analytics department for example.

Just my opinion but I think the criticism of Ashworth is a bit harsh
Interestingly BD Ashworth's strengths are supposed to lie in all aspects of DoF role other than player recruitment.

IMO he would be a great appointment at Everton but I just don't see it happening.

I think they were quite good for expensive mate, I don't know exact figures. But they are still good players and buys IMO.

£90mil ish on Paqueta and Kudus ?

Bearing in mind both could have been and were available when I (some random on the net) was posting about them at half that price.

If you're a Thelwell sceptic, then you would I guess
I'm not a sceptic. I think he's done fairly good job all things considered, especially in his attempt to rebuild the academy with hiring those directors. But I wouldn't take a puff piece as gospel especially when there's the line “You’ve got a better process, vision and strategy than we have,” they told him. “It’s just that you’re near the bottom of the league and we’re near the top.” that absolutely none of the big teams would say in total sincerity or honesty.

I'll admit there's a whiff of Kenwright about that - "what would Everton do?"

But it does suggest that Douglas omitted the name of who said it rather than Thelwell

I think he's been bit unlucky.

He's brought in some decent players but Dyches 80s tribute act made it impossible to get anything out of them.

If Dyche had us mid-table (not to hard as Moyes proved), it's not too difficult to imagine a scenario where Dyche leaves end of contract and Thelwell is kept on.

He'd probably have had a big role in picking the next manager.

TFG will probably take their time in deciding what to do next here. Moyes is clearly in the driving seat for this summer and by the time they firm up any intentions, any new appointee is probably not going to play a significant role in recruitment at least for this summers intake. You would hope that plans in that regard are already taking some shape.

…yep, the contract situation is a real mess, I imagine the club are already speaking to some regarding extended deals (Gueye, Doucoure, Keane etc) just to ensure we have numbers in the short-term.
I can't believe people are advocating renewing Keane's contract. That's completely insane, the man is a walking catastrophe on £4m a year. Let's be done with him come the 1st July.
